NFL Football Revealed on Squib Kick

Adrian Peterson plays the combine game well

by James on March 1st, 2007

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Weigh me, measure me, time me, put me through drills, and then hire me. Sounds pretty crazy, but that is what the NFL does to evaluate players.

The system sometimes fails and a Chris Spielman emerges. Chris was too small and too slow and too everything else.

But the Combine does not measure heart and instinct and Spielman had both.

My Lions had better pay attention to the combines, though.

Joe Thomas

Was Joe Thomas impressive? Yes.
Do the Lions need a left tackle. Well, Yes and No.

Huh?

They currently have Jeff Backus locked up at left tackle for several years. He is above average. Most likely Jeff would move to right tackle.

So?

So, then you have an unproven rookie at a position that was actually filled and an out of position player at the other tackle.

And you did that with the #2 pick. Good going.

On the other hand, Kevin Jones is trying to come back from serious injury and was arguably your most productive player when healthy.

Kevin is a power runner and receiver. Most of the great teams ran two back systems. Power back and speed back.

Adrian Peterson

Hmm, what about Adrian Peterson?

Here is what John Czarnecki had to say for Fox Sports

3. Adrian Peterson, Oklahoma, RB
Because of his upright running style, Peterson has been favorably compared to Eric Dickerson, who still holds the NFL rookie rushing record of 1,808 yards.

And if you’re not interested in a quarterback, Peterson may be the best all-around player in the draft. He proved that by running a 4.38 40-yard dash. Some scouts caught him at 4.35 and the NFL Network listed him at 4.4. But the majority had him under 4.4 which is very impressive for a power runner.

At the next level, Peterson should be a game-breaker and you have to wonder why Detroit would pass on a player who could touch the ball 25 times a game versus one who simply will be blocking (Wisconsin’s Joe Thomas). source

Fortunately for Matt Millen, there is a wide receiver available and he is also really good! :)

So will Peterson go to the Lions? Sure seems to make more sense than picking up another left tackle.

My guess is that they will miss on the opportunity to take Peterson and look to add to their defense. Marinelli loves defense. Last year he passed on Cutler and Leinart to take Ernie Sims.

But you gotta wonder what Mike Martz is thinking?

Though offensive lineman don’t put fans in the seats, don’t sell season tickets and aren’t the sexy picks that get fans drooling for next year they are necessary to building a winning (note: Lions aren’t known for winning)teams. Biggest problem I have with the Lions using a pick that high for Joe Thomas is that it will be too high of a price tag for an offensive lineman that is not considered a potential all pro type player. I say use the first pick for Peterson and the second pick for an offensive lineman. Use the rest of your picks for defense. Lions have a lot of salary cap room. Use it wisely for a change. Hopefully the new coaching staff will have some input into how that money is spent and not just Millen.
