Al Davis (Legend) and Lane Kiffen (current whipping boy) are on top of the world
NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
You there, shut up and listen and you may learn something!
Always controversial, Al Davis is relishing his position in the draft. Al is the President and Managing General Partner of the Raiders.
He has been there forever. Davis has 3 Super Bowls, 4 AFC Championships, and 1 AFL Championship.
That is AFL, as in American Football League.
Controversial or not, like him or not, he knows what he is doing and he commands attention. That is why he is loving it right now.
NFL Football Al Davis factoid -
In 1963, at the age of 33, Davis became the head coach and general manager of the AFL’s Oakland Raiders. He was the youngest person in the history of professional football to hold these positions. source
That brings us back to the draft.
Who is Al Davis going to take? Maybe we should say, who are Al Davis and new coach Lane Kiffen going to take?
Well, Lane was asked if Oakland would keep the pick or trade it and he said:
Kiffin said the Raiders would do whatever was best for their team — how’s that for an honest and clichéd answer? — and then, sarcastically, added this gem: “If we do pick there, we’ll pick a guy on offense or defense.” source
In other words, Lane ain’t talking.
NFL Football wordpower - whipping boy - Whipping boy, a medieval term for boy of the same age as a nobleman who was whipped in the noble’s place
Slang for a scapegoat
Al, on the other hand, could not resist.
When discussing LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell, whom many expect to be the No. 1 overall pick, Davis compared him to Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway.
Davis said Russell’s arm strength is like Elway’s, and so is his side-to-side movement.
Al went on to expound on the trade for Elway that fell through. He claimed the league stopped it, because he was threatening to move the team to LA.
Lane Kiffen also had some nice things to say about JaMarcus Russell.
Kiffin admitted that Russell is a quiet leader, very similar to Titans quarterback Vince Young. You can tell, he said, that Russell’s teammates simply gravitate to him and want to be around him. “I saw the same things prior to when we played Texas in the Rose Bowl,” said Kiffin, who used to be USC’s offensive coordinator. “You could sense how much the Texas players wanted to perform and play for Young.” source
Al has always harbored troubled football players and found ways to make them strong contributors. Last year a couple of those players spent the year at odds with former coach Art Shell.
How is new coach Lane Kiffen going to handle them?
Kiffin said some interesting things. He believes that disgruntled Randy Moss will be a Raider this season and that he is building a good relationship with Jerry Porter, who spent last season in Art Shell’s doghouse. Kiffin said he was even coaching Porter on the practice field last week. source
Lane is saying all the right things and not saying all the wrong things.
Meanwhile, Al Davis doesn’t care, because he is just too busy feeling on Top of the World!
