Brady Quinn? Gaines Adams? Oh no, its Matt Millen
NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
Brady says - Hey Matt, it is still ok to draft me!
We have all been pondering how it is possible. There can be no possible way.
No way for what?
No way for Matt Millen to screw up this draft for the Detroit Lions.
How can you say that? This is the man that drafted wide receivers like 100 drafts in a row!
There hasn’t even been a 100 NFL drafts. You goofball.
Yeah, well if you are a Lions fans it sure seems like it.
So how is he going to screw up the draft? Adam Schefter of NFL.com thinks the Lions have it made!
Ultimately and obviously, the decision belongs to Davis, who has had it since 1963, the year he was named head coach and general manager.
Should Davis prevail — and it’s almost always a smart idea to guess he will — then Detroit would be left looking at Georgia Tech wide receiver Calvin Johnson, Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn, Wisconsin offensive tackle Joe Thomas and Clemson defensive end Gaines Adams.
First we have to go through the conventional wisdom. It goes like this; the Lions are sitting in the number 2 slot in the draft.
They will wait for Oakland to take JaMarcus Russell with the first pick. Oakland will do this because the guy has a cannon for an arm and outplayed Brady Quinn in a bowl game.
Sure, he is a little overweight to be a quarterback and there are some character issues, but he still looks like a franchise quarterback.
This leaves the Lions with all the power. Just below them Cleveland wants Quinn. Just below Cleveland, Tampa Bay wants Calvin Johnson. Teams below them are also willing to deal in order to have a shot at getting a quarterback.
This leaves the Lions with a shot at trading down to get Gaines Adams or Joe Thomas plus picking up something in the trade.
So what is wrong with that?
Nothing except Matt Millen is involved.
You mean he is going to take a wide receiver?
Worse. Millen is trying to trade Josh McCown to Oakland.
This would leave the Lions in big trouble. Oakland would probably draft Calvin Johnson, so the Tampa Bay trade would be gone. Then when the Lions go to draft there would be two quarterbacks available, so the Cleveland Brown trade would be gone.
So if you take Joe Thomas or Gaines Adams, you would be overpaying them as number two picks. The only option would be to trade down further and not pick up any stars.
You do need a lot of players on the Lions. Not just stars!
Yeah, but the number 2 pick, dude, number 2. We gotta get somebody really good!
You know they still could get Brady Quinn and finally have a quarterback for the future.
Yeah, he is even prepared to play for a loser, like the Lions.
When Peyton Manning came out, people said he couldn’t win the big one, he couldn’t beat Florida,” said Gil Brandt, an analyst for NFL.com, who was vice president of player personnel for the Dallas Cowboys from 1960-89. “People say the same thing about Brady Quinn. I disagree with all that. I think if it wasn’t for Brady and his production, Notre Dame never would have been there playing LSU and they wouldn’t have been playing in a game as big as the USC game was.” source
For Lions fans the speculation is not Brady Quinn or will we trade down and pick up Gaines Adams.
No, we are busy wondering how Matt Millen will screw up this draft!
NFL Football Fan Question If Oakland takes Calvin Johnson, what do the Lions do?

Lions will get a good player. Any of the top 6 guys will make our team better. Heck with the money. Its not Matt Millin’s dough so what does he care? He has made given boat loads of cash to chumps before (aka Charles Rogers, Mike Williams, most of the free agent losers he has signed).

What if they trade way down for a late first rounder and a late second rounder and take a couple of wide receivers?
