NFL Football Revealed on Squib Kick

Brady Quinn & JaMarcus Russell - if you can get a quarterback, take one

by James on April 18th, 2007

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Brady says - You need me more than you think. If you can actually think.

Brady Quinn (Simon Bruty/SI)We laugh about it. We joke about it. We even wonder about it, but how can the Raiders, Lions, and Browns be so pathetic?

Just today, two people passed my cubicle and one said, “Is he still alive?”

The other one said, “Yeah, maybe we ought to up his dosage.”

No, wait a minute, didn’t mean to mention that.

Another group went by, going on and on about how stupid bad teams are at drafting. If they get burned once, they get major gun shy.

Pat Kirwan at NFL.com has tried… and tried to convince us that the Raiders, Lions, and Browns all need a good quarterback.

It has been said on a regular basis that the most mistakes are made when evaluating quarterbacks: Peyton Manning was too mechanical; Tom Brady was too weak; Philip Rivers threw side arm; Drew Brees was too short; and the list goes on. I’m not sure that it matters, but I do know that they are the most important players on the field. No team will get very far without a quarterback. source

Let’s check the drafting of quarterbacks score:

Raiders

In the last three years, the Raiders have passed on six QBs who are present starters in the NFL and two of them are in their division. Enough is enough! Oakland must take JaMarcus Russell. The evaluation process in the past led the Raiders away from enough starting quarterbacks that it’s time for owner Al Davis to just take Russell.

Lions

In the past three years, the Lions have rejected first round quarterbacks six times. Five of them are starters in the NFL and all of them are about 10 years younger than Kitna. It’s time to pull the trigger on Brady Quinn and let the Harrington experiment go. Quinn threw 95 touchdown passes in college, accumulated 11,762 yards and had 11 games of 300 yards passing. Take a chance.

Browns

The other issue that haunts teams is the “Ghosts of the past.” Not every team has the same recovery rate from bad decisions, especially when it comes to highly drafted quarterbacks. Cleveland put all of its hopes and dreams of a world championship on the arm of Tim Couch and that was a disaster….

Because the Couch experiment is older, I went back four years and the Browns have passed on four quarterbacks starting in the NFL. The point is not that the Browns have made mistakes, but that it is time to get a quarterback.

Deep down analysis

Hmm, think about it, Oakland is looking at Andrew Walter to start for them or maybe Josh Booty or to trade to the Lions for Josh McCown.

Walter is known for …for…uhh, having the first name Andrew.
Josh Booty has a blank stats page.
McCown is so good the Lions let him play wide receiver last year.
Ouch.

Ok, how about the Lions. They have Jon Kitna. He is only a few years from collecting social security and is best known for grooming Carson Palmer. When asked about all his turnovers, Jon Kitna dropped the microphone and said, “ouch, that hurt my toe.”
Ouch.

Well, what about the Browns?

The Browns have Charlie Frye. He played at that powerhouse football school, Akron. Ak what? Does 17 interceptions to 10 TDs say anything?
Yeah, it says Ouch!

Suffering Lions fans

Last year was especially excruciating for your intrepid author as the Lions passed on Matt Leinart and Jay Cutler, both starters now, to take Ernie Sims. Sims is fine, but still no QB.

Meanwhile, Phillip Rivers was blossoming at San Diego, Alex Smith was finding his way at San Francisco, Eli Manning was growing at New York, and Roethlisberger had just recently won a Super Bowl.

Here is a subtle message to the General Manages. Quit acting like a bunch of clowns and get a quarterback. How do you ever expect to win without one?

NFL Football Fan Question Will Oakland, Detroit, or Cleveland draft quarterbacks?

If Lions are not taking Brady or JaMarcus then Drew Stanton after they draft Peterson with their first pick.

some close to the Lions are saying Trent Edwards. Hope he is better than cousin Kalimba.
