NFL Football Revealed on Squib Kick

Brady Quinn will learn Lions fans suffer, but Cleveland even loses in suffering

by James on June 17th, 2007

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Brady laughing as he says “Fire Matt Millen”

Brady Quinn (Joe Raymond / AP)It is not easy to be a Lions fan. First there are the creative Fire Matt Millen signs that you have to come up with.

Did you know that there are Fire Matt Millen signs at Red Wing Hockey games and Piston Ball games? So it is hard to get attention. A simple fire Millen sign just does not get the job done, but then neither has Matt. :)

Now what could be worse than the glamorizing of Cleveland to be the city of big losers? Hey, didn’t my Pistons just get LeBronzed right out of the playoffs?

Sport fans just want to see winners and not turn into whiners. It is simple really. Take… the long hard road and methodically build a championship team and win a title or two. That is all we fans ask for, unless you are in New York watching baseball, New England watching football, L.A. watching basketball, or somewhere else where they win bushels of titles.

My Lions have not won a title since 1957 and that is a long long long time.

1957: Prior to the start of the season Head Coach Raymond Parker who guided the Lions through their best era of success abruptly resigns. Assistant George Wilson would replace him the following day. Rogers helps lead the Lions to an 8-4 season which is good enough to earn a tie for the Western Conference title with San Francisco 49ers.

The Lions would fall behind early in the Western Conference Championship at San Francisco’s Cesar Stadium. However, the Lions would roar to life in the second half and would claim a 31-27 victory to earn a trip to the NFL Championship game.

In the NFL Championship played in front of a 55,263 fans at Briggs Stadium the Lions take apart the Browns 59-14 to claim their 4th NFL Championship, and 3rd of the decade. However, the Lions would not win another Championship in the 20th Century. source

We want our championships. Keep in mind, though, the Tigers have won a couple times since then, the Red Wings won 3 times, and the Pistons have won 3 times since then.

Cleve-land

So how does all this compare to Cleveland?

What do most Northern Ohio sports fans know about world championships? What their parents or grandparents told them.

The Browns won the 1964 NFL title with the peerless Jim Brown bulldozing opponents. Since then, there have been many chances to win NFL, NBA and Major League Baseball crowns . . . but, ultimately, no team went the distance. The Indians haven’t won a World Series since 1948 —owing, some say, to the Curse of Rocky Colavito — and the Cavaliers have never won it all. source

Maybe Brady Quinn can turn that around and get them going.

Shuffle off to Buffalo

The number one suffering City for Championships is Buffalo.

Winters in upstate New York are harsh. Folks turn to their Bills and Sabres for inspiration. What they get instead are exasperating near misses.

The Marv Levy-led Bills reached four consecutive Super Bowls, but lost each time. The Sabres reached the Stanley Cup Finals in two different eras but lost each time. The NBA’s Buffalo Braves came and went without winning it all. And, oh yeah, it just keeps snowing and snowing. source

NFL Football Fan Question Nobody loses like my Lions. What do you think?
