Brett Favre tickles a Lion
Today we have a story of 3 young rookies, Matt Leinart, Jay Cutler, and Ernie Sims and a future Hall of Famer, Brett Favre.
The NFL provides a background of constant change. Well, almost constant change. It seems like certain things never change, while everything else does.
Just what is your intrepid author rambling on about?
Does not change: Lions are losers. Brett Favre is great.
Does change: Everything else.
Here is how… the day went. The Lions lost. Oh, you knew that one. They are locked into a mortal battle to the death for the first pick in the draft. Only the Unmighty Oakland Raiders have any chance of out losing them.
Oakland lost. Taking no chances they refused to score against the Rams. Losing 20 - 0.
Not to be deterred the Lions allowed Brett Favre, in arguably one of his worst games, to break the Dan Marino record for pass completions.
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) - Brett Favre passed Dan Marino to become the league leader in completions with a 21-yard pass to wide receiver Carlyle Holiday in Sunday’s Packers game against Detroit.
Favre found Holiday over the middle with 1:42 left in the second quarter for the 4,968th completion of his 16-year career. Favre needed 14 completions coming into the game to top the list. source
Just for fun, Favre added to a couple of other records, 255 straight starts for a QB, and consecutive seasons over 3,000 yards at 15.
Right after the record the TV announcers were proud to announce a Lion’s record. The previous week the Lions had rushed for a NFL low -3 yards. No team had ever rushed for negative yardage. Leave it to the Lions.
So, Brett stays great and the Lions stay terrible, where is all this change?
Denver beat Arizona 37 - 20, and both teams had rookie quarterbacks starting.
Jay Cutler was 21 for 31 for 261 yards and 2 TDs for Denver.
Matt Leinart was 20 for 35 for 214 yards for Arizona.
Ernie Sims, who the Lions drafted before Leinart and Cutler, had 3 tackles. Don’t get me wrong, Ernie has had a fine year and is in the running for Rookie of the Year, but not many linebackers take you to the Super Bowl, unless they have a good quarterback.
Ok, we will leave Ray Lewis out of this.
Hopefully for Lions fans (count me among them), it all works out and they get Brady Quinn, but right now it just looks like another inept move by the Lions management. They are a group that specializes in the move ineptness.
So Arizona and Denver are building towards a new future with good young quarterbacks. Detroit may get lucky in the draft and get a good young quarterback, but there will never be another Brett Favre!
