NFL Football Revealed on Squib Kick

Brett Favre - Packers look to deny Seahawks

by James on January 12th, 2008

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Brett must keep the gun slinging to a minimum

Brett FavreWhen you look at the 4 playoff games this weekend, the very first game appears to be the best shot at an upset.

The Seahawks have everything they need to upset the Packers.

Yahoo NFL Football sports writers Jason Cole, Charles Robinson, and Michael Silver all reviewed this game. Let’s us examine their comments with your intrepid author’s comments in italics.

The Question is “Can the Seahawks pull the upset?”

Cole:

Not if quarterback Matt Hasselbeck continues to be too cute with throws. Hasselbeck sometimes tries to be too tricky for his own good. Against the Washington Redskins on Saturday, that led to two interceptions in the second half that almost turned the game in Washington’s favor.

Cole goes on to say more about the mistakes that Matt Hasselbeck can make to ruin the game for the Seahawks and while Matt will certainly influence the outcome, because Seattle has shifted their offense to be pretty much airborne, it seems more likely that Seattle’s best shot will be in the trenches.

Robinson:

…But Hasselbeck has been erratic against upper-tier cornerbacks. …Seattle will struggle to make big plays against Harris and Woodson. And when Hasselbeck can’t make big plays, he gets frustrated and tends to force the issue…

Robinson goes on to say that the Packers corners and defense will force Seattle to hand off more. Seems highly unlikely the Seahawks will stray from their base passing offense, no matter what the troubles.

Silver:

…And don’t forget that Seattle’s star-studded defense will have a say in this game’s outcome. Still, it’s a Lambeau Leap to believe that a pass-first team will thrive against the league’s best pair of cornerbacks, Woodson and Harris…

Silver goes on to say that Ryan Grant gives the Packers a second dimension and that will make the difference.

Seattle Seahawk rush

Hmm, my thinking still lies in whether the Seattle rush can affect Brett Favre in any way. Brett is on a roll and if he just throws quick slants to avoid the rush and uses Ryan Grant to set up the deep ball, then Seattle is in a whole world of hurt.

Meanwhile, Green Bay is more than just a pair of excellent corners on defense. In fact, their young aggressive defense has carried them more than once all season. It appears that Brett does less gun slinging now that he knows the defense can hold the other team down.

My pick? Green Bay 31 Seattle 24.
