NFL Football Revealed on Squib Kick

Calvin Johnson and the Detroit Lions dream of another victory

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Calvin Johnson - Megatron lopes down the field

Calvin Johnson (by Paul Sancya, AP)It is a world filled with madness.

It is a world gone bonkers.

The Detroit Lions are undefeated and dreaming of victory over the Minnesota Vikings.

This would be no small feat. In fact, it may take the rather large feet of Roy Williams and Calvin “Megatron” Johnson to pull it off.

This creates numerous problems for us fans. We have no way of coping with winning. Losing is our private little world and we are proud of it.

No way does a Lion’s fan have to even watch a full game or any game after about the 5th week. It is over by then. The only thing undecided is how high will the draft pick be?

For many fans they will miss the Minnesota game due to the fact that they are strung out in some institution on thorazene. (We just aren’t used to victory, let alone a road victory, even it was only the lowly Raiders.)

This, of course, explains why the NFL had to extend the deadline to get a sell out for the Minnesota Viking game. It is hard to sign a credit card slip to buy a ticket, while wearing a straight jacket!

Coach Rod Marinelli has big plans for the fans.

There won’t be a white-out or a blue-out at Ford Field on Sunday. And there barely was a sellout. However, Lions coach Rod Marinelli wants a shout-out where the stadium turns into a pit….

“You have a second-year quarterback (Tarvaris Jackson ) coming in there and you have to make it as loud for their checks and audibles and cadence.” source

Marinelli really loves the fans and who wouldn’t love them when you can look them in the eyes and see 50 years of suffering laid bare to the world. Marinelli aches to give the fans a winner.

He met with every fan who stuck around after each practice during training camp. It was not a quick handshake. He walked slowly, spoke with fans for 20-30 seconds each and signed everything he could.

During those moments, he learned the history of many Lions fans. He learned about their frustrations and dreams and Marinelli wants to deliver.

“(You see) how passionate they are and how strong they are through all the ups and downs,” Marinelli said. “They blew my mind. That was special.”

This will not be a walk in the park, no Sunday stroll, and no ducks on the pond type of victory. It most likely will be a knock down and drag them out kind of game.

History is not on the side of the Lions.

Minnesota will be going for its 11th straight victory over Detroit, but this is the first time since 2000 that both teams will have winning records going into the game. source

Eleven in a row? You know, they usually play these games because things are not really decided until some fat lady sings or the game is over, which ever happens first, but it seems like the fat lady sang a long time ago. Eleven in a row?

And get this…The Vikings are 5 - 0 at Ford Field where the Lions play. Isn’t that road field advantage?

Nicholas J. Cotsonika of the Detroit Free Press is predicting victory. Yeah, he writes for a Detroit Newspaper and predicts a Lions victory and no one has him committed? What is going on here?

But the bottom line is that teams got the bulk of their yards against the Vikings through the air, not on the ground, and that’s precisely what the Lions prefer to do….

Overall: The Lions have lost 10 consecutive games – and 14 of their last 15 – to the Vikings. It’s time for the misery to come to an end. source

Hold on here, did Nicholas say 10 losses in a row? Thought it was eleven? Does someone know something about Sunday already?

Movie Review - Premonition - Starring Sandra Bullock: No, she does not know anything about whether the Lions will win on Sunday, but she does see her husband’s death before it is to happen. Won’t ruin the movie for you, it was very intense, but the ending just did not do it for me.

Anyway, back to the Detroit Lions and the Calvin Johnson era. Can it be an era after 1 game? He did catch a touchdown pass and they did win a road game. Ok, call it an era.

The Vikings are very wary of Calvin Johnson.

The second overall pick in this year’s NFL draft, Johnson stands 6-5 and weighs 239 pounds. Yet somehow he went to the scouting combine in February and ran a 4.33 in the 40-yard dash, broad-jumped 11 feet and hit 43 inches on his vertical leap.

“He’s like Randy Moss,” said Vikings 5-9 cornerback Antoine Winfield, who might spend at least some of his Sunday afternoon covering Johnson. “He has the physical things to dominate a game. It’ll definitely be a challenge for us.” source

So who wins this game?

Usually it is easy for the Squibster to just predict a loss and take it to the bank.

Not this time, your intrepid author is predicting a Lion’s victory!

Go get ‘em, Calvin!

I think the Lions are going to be a better team this year with the new coach. The attitude in the Detroit Lions organization is a positive one, and with a win in Detroit, the season can be a good learning experience for the team.
