NFL Football Revealed on Squib Kick

Calvin Johnson, Brady Quinn and the Top 5 best off season moves

by James on June 12th, 2007

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Number 4 on the important off season moves in the NFL, the Lions taking Calvin Johnson

Calvin JohnsonCalvin Johnson is a speeding freight train and the Detroit Lions know it.

As a rookie, Calvin could change the entire Detroit Lions offense. He better. There will be somewhere in the neighborhood of 28 mill in guaranteed money wrapped up in Calvin Johnson. Here is what Jon Kitna had to say about him.

“This guy is like the perfect mold for receivers, and he has the desire to be great. He went above what I thought he could be. He has a different way about him.

“He doesn’t take any plays off. He gets mad at himself. That’s a good thing.” source

But Calvin is only number 4 on the list of top 5 off season moves compiled by Phil Barber at the Sporting News.

4. Lions draft Calvin Johnson. After selecting three other wide receivers high in recent years, it was politically difficult for embattled Detroit general manager Matt Millen to take another at No. 2. He did it anyway, and the decision could end up saving his job. source

So what are the top 3 best off season moves?

The first two are kind of funny.

1. Raiders trade Randy Moss.
New coach Lane Kiffin was doomed to suffer until owner Al Davis swallowed some pride and unloaded the notorious malcontent for a fourth-round draft pick.

The 2nd move you may have guessed is the Patriots getting Randy Moss. Marshall graduate Randy Moss could dramatically alter the Patriots offense if he gets back to Minnesota Viking form, where he was a touchdown threat on every play.

NFL Football Randy Moss factoid Randy had 90 touchdowns in his 7 years as a Viking.

Move number 3 is the 5 year signing of Frank Gore. Look out for this guy. Frank terrorized the league last year even when teams knew he was going to run.

Gore racked up 159 yards against the Lions before leaving the game with a concussion and it was only the 3rd quarter. The following week Frank ran for 212 yards against the Seahawks.

The number 5 best move is a no brainer. If involves Cleveland. Figure it out yet? Of course, the drafting of Joe Thomas and then coming back and getting Brady Quinn. Not bad for a down and out team that needed a franchise left tackle and a new quarterback.

So the top 5 moves are:
Randy Moss is gone,
Randy Moss is here,
Frank Gore is here for a long time,
Calvin Johnson is here,
Joe Thomas and Brady Quinn came here together.
