NFL Football Revealed on Squib Kick

Calvin Johnson is in a long line of Lions receivers

by James on July 9th, 2007

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Calvin hauls in a stack of dough!

Calvin JohnsonCalvin Johnson is going to rescue the Detroit Lions football team and pull them from the world of mediocrity into the world of great achievement. Johnson will do this all by himself, because he is a very excellent well paid athlete playing wide receiver.

Now you can take the above paragraph and pull out the name Calvin Johnson and insert Charles Rogers or Mike Williams, since both of them were going to rescue the Detroit Lions.

It did not work out that way, for whatever reasons, but we still keep the faith, since Matt Millen will just draft another wide receiver next year or sign a free agent wide receiver.

The Lions have over 10 millions bucks tied up in players that they are not even playing anymore.

As you’d imagine, the receiver position is causing the biggest headache. The Lions have 16 wideouts on the payroll for 2007, including long-gone Mike Williams, Charles Rogers and Corey Bradford, who will eat up $10.2 million of the Lions’ $109-million cap. Whenever rookie Calvin Johnson signs, the Lions will have close to $28 million spent on wide receivers alone.

Can that number possibly be a misprint? 16 wideouts in 2007. Think what progress the team could have made if they had kept drafting linemen?

The positive side to the whole argument is that Calvin Johnson will start on one side and appears to be the real deal, while Roy Williams will start on the other side and is a Pro Bowler. The third receiver will be the NFC leading pass catcher Mike Furrey.

Quarterback Bulger

The latest rumor in Lions land concerns Mark Bulger of St. Louis. The feeling is that Mike Martz made Mark a superstar QB and when he goes free agent at the end of the year the Lions would be the team to play for. Stayed tuned on that one.

NFL Football Fan Question How does Matt Millen hold onto his job?
