NFL Football Revealed on Squib Kick

Calvin Johnson is the key, but is Gaines Adams the guy?

by James on April 24th, 2007

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Gaines brings it with speed and speed kills!

This could turn out to be one of the most entertaining drafts in a long long time.

Why, you ask?

Because the top 7 or 8 teams need all top ten rated players. Some worse than others.

Can you honestly say that Oakland, Detroit, Cleveland, Tampa, Arizona, Washington, Minnesota, Atlanta, Miami, and Houston don’t need pretty much everything?

Wow, was that some kind of double single negative? But you get the picture and it isn’t pretty.

Oakland has… to contend with Al Davis and all his whims. You can’t really call him out, because he has won it all more than once.

Al is not dumb. He knows he needs a quarterback. JaMarcus Russell is staring him in the face. Russell can throw a ball 80 yards.

Read that above paragraph. There is a statement up there worth repeating. Al is not dumb.

Al knows that Calvin Johnson could be one of those once in a lifetime guys. He has all the tools, the size, the speed, the hands, and the experience.

Calvin would look pretty good catching balls on one side with a rejuvenated in attitude Moss catching balls on the other side. You would still need a quarterback, but the Lions are offering up Josh McCown and Trent Edwards may be available with Oakland’s number 2 pick.

Now let’s move to the next team, the Lions.

Can we say Matt Millen is not dumb? Hmm, your intrepid author will leave the answer to that up to you.

Perhaps the best thing Millen has done in Detroit is maneuver in the draft. The highlights: In 2001, he traded up to get defensive tackle Shaun Rogers in the second round. In 2004, he traded down one spot and took Roy Williams, then traded back into the first round to get running back Kevin Jones. source

Now consider the Lions position. For the future, the Lions need a quarterback. JaMarcus Russell or Brady Quinn are sitting right there. One of them has to be available, but there are problems.

The biggest problem is the shadow of Joey Harrington. The Lions invested a number 3 pick in Joey and he was labeled can’t miss; only he did. Now all the losing was not Joey’s fault, but the scars remain.

The second problem lies in the two quarterbacks themselves.

JaMarcus does not have a lot of experience, period. That game against Brady Quinn where he supposedly proved he is the better quarterback was JaMarcus best game ever.

And as for Brady Quinn, well, let’s just say that Notre Dame is wildly popular in South Bend, but not in Michigan. Then you have to throw in the fact that Brady lost most of his big games. Was that his fault, or like Joey, was he stuck on a mediocre to bad team?

Where the Lions need the most help is on defense.

Marinelli the old line coach would love to draft Gaines Adams. The Tampa II requires a strong rush and Adams can provide that. Some critics would point out that he is a little light to play the position at 258 pounds, but he does bring the rushing speed.

Still it brings on the problem of drafting Gaines Adams at the number 2 slot and paying him number 2 money, when he could be available further down in the draft.

Most likely, if Oakland goes with JaMarcus Russell, then Detroit trades down.

Both Cleveland and Tampa would love to move up.

Cleveland wants Quinn.

Tampa wants Calvin Johnson.

Oddly enough, Detroit may trade further down, because Joe Thomas, LaRon Landry, or Patrick Willis would all suit their needs.

Who is Patrick Willis?

In his senior season in 2006, he totaled 137 tackles (87 solo). Before the season, he received the Chucky Mullins Courage Award. He was named pre-season first team All-American by Athlon, Lindy’s, Nationalchamps.net, Rivals.com, Playboy, Blue Ribbon College Yearbook, Phil Steele, The Sporting News, and The Kickoff. For his efforts, he was awarded SEC Defensive Player of the Year, first team All-SEC, first team AP All-American, and the winner of the prestigious Dick Butkus Award, given to the most outstanding linebacker in college football for the year 2006. source

Patrick ran a 4.51 40 at the combines!

So we learned today that where Calvin Johnson is drafted is the key to how the whole draft will go, but Gaines Adams may be the guy for the Lions anyway.
