Carmella DeCesare likes an undrafted QB

Jeff and CarmellaLet’s talk NFL Quarterbacks.

Most of them are not that hot. Maybe it is because the one’s that are that hot are smoking hot and maybe it is because they are not that hot.

(Of course, hot is to the left and it is not the red headed guy, Jeff Garcia. Hot by definition is Carmella DeCesare.)

A quarterback has a lot on his mind, because it is a position with a lot of jobs. He has to read the defense, call the plays or receive them by radio, call the audible, know what every player is supposed to do, then when 300 pound men come a calling, the quarterback has to somehow keep his cool and throw a perfect spiral.

And there are thick playbooks to learn.

And there are meetings on strategy and tendencies to attend.

And don’t forget they have to do all this while dating hot women like Carmella!

And there is just so much learning and experience to soak up it can take a long long time to become a great quarterback or even a good one.

Yet the league insists on throwing bushels of money at untested rookies to play quarterback in this league and expects them to produce immediately.

The first-rounder’s don’t lack talent; they just aren’t given time to mature because of the burden of their rookie contracts on the team salary cap. source

It used to take 5 years of servitude at the quarterback backup position to earn your stripes and begin playing as a starter, but with all the money on the line many of the quarterbacks are pushed into service much sooner and even the rule of thumb has been changed to 3 years. That brings up the draft class of 2004.

Kitna, Garcia, Dallas’ Tony Romo and Kansas City’s Damon Huard are for-sure starters who weren’t drafted. Cincinnati’s Carson Palmer, New York’s Eli Manning, San Diego’s Philip Rivers and Pittsburgh’s Ben Roethlisberger are the only four quarterbacks of the 13 drafted in the first round from 2000-04 who enjoy similar job security.

The five highest-rated quarterbacks in the NFC this season — Carolina’s Jake Delhomme, Garcia, Arizona’s Kurt Warner, Romo and Kitna — weren’t drafted by an NFL team.

Now here is the part where you have to pay attention.

“The Rise of the Unwanted” is a nice story of kicked-around guys who are capable of managing a game while minimizing mistakes. But the NFL is in trouble if it can’t produce a new generation of quarterback stars picked in the first round for their playmaking capabilities.

Too many first-round selections have become second-string players because of the huge dollars they get as rookies. It guarantees them significant playing time even if they aren’t ready. The incentive isn’t there. And when young quarterbacks are destroyed emotionally by poor preparation, they often don’t recover.

It won’t change unless there is collectively bargained restraint that prohibits dumping $20 million into the laps of 22-year-olds who have no concept what awaits them in the NFL. Playing time becomes an entitlement.

And their failures have created more opportunities for guys like Kitna and Garcia.

There you have it. All the money paid to other guys just opens the door for undrafted QBs like Kitna and Garcia.

And they can get hot women!

2 opinions for Carmella DeCesare, undrafted QBs get Playmates

I could be wrong but I think you ran that photo last year too.

And personally, I think you could run it every week. It speaks volumes about both the people in it. So much for T.O.’s remarks about Garcia.

Away from great photos and envy….

I have yet to figure out why the NFL does such a poor job of bringing quarterbacks along and why the big college QBs often fail.

I also think teams rush in the big draft choices with decidedly mixed results. For instance, both the Giants and Cardinals would have been better to stick with Kurt Warner for a full year instead of turning the ball over to the big name rookies. The win column and the stats don’t lie in that case.

    Rock,
you have a pornographic memory just like me. It was hard to find a family friendly photo.
Like you, would rather see a seasoned QB most of the time. Sometimes when your team sucks, you would just as soon see the rookie.
