NFL Football Revealed on Squib Kick

Cincinnati Bengals? Phil Simms likes them

by James on August 30th, 2006

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Phil Simms on the art of quarterbacking comWriting for NFL.com, Phil Simms discusses how much he likes the Cincinnati Bengals football team. He discusses everything from Carson Palmer’s knee to the speed of the defense. It is a must read.

NFL Football Squibster full disclosure How painful to admit my Lions are starting the castoff quarterback of the Bengals, Jon Kitna. He held off Carson Palmer for a while, but Palmer is going to be a star in this league.

Phil had an outstanding NFL career, including winning Super Bowl XXI.

Many consider Simms’ performance in Super Bowl XXI, when the Giants met the Denver Broncos, to be the best ever played by a quarterback. Although the Giants had a legendary defense their offense was matched by John Elway and the Broncos. Despite that, Simms went 22 for 25 for 268 yards, setting a Super Bowl record for accuracy and passer rating with a rating of 158.3, and throwing 3 touchdown passes. His record for passer rating was not just a Super Bowl record; it was also an NFL postseason record source

As for the Bengals, it all starts with Carson Palmer and ends with Marvin Lewis. Carson threw for 32 touchdowns last year and had a quarterback rating of 118. He might have taken the team all the way, if not for a freak play resulting in a severe knee injury. Of course, this is where my guy, Jon Kitna takes over and they lose. Not all Jon’s fault, but he was a convenient fall guy.

Marvin Lewis is seen as the savior of the Cincinnati franchise and is certainly successful so far.

Ron Mason Detroit NewsMarvin was offered the Michigan State University job by athletic director and former College Hockey coaching legend Ron Mason. Marvin turned him down, because he knew a NFL job was approaching. It may have been a good thing. Ron’s job may be in trouble right now and with Marvin’s penchant for taking at-risk players (low character), it could only be worse. If Marvin had turned them into big winners, then the hypocritical world of sports and fans would have elected Ron Mason as Governor.

Now back to the Bengals, their team should be excellent, but their schedule is tough, very tough. Your intrepid writer sees them challenging for the Division, if they remain healthy. So, let’s say 8 wins if Carson’s knee does not totally come back and 10 wins if they can get on a roll.
