Coach Rod Marinelli has The Secret (about football)

At the NFL meetings in Phoenix, the NFC Coaches held interviews that were supposed to be 1 hour in length. Coach Rod Marinelli went over the hour, was still talking a half hour later, and could have kept going.
Marinelli is the real deal.
Lion’s fans point to his lackluster record and say he is not the real deal.
Squibster says he is the real deal.
That does not mean you start to win right off the bat. First you have to clean house. Then you have to rebuild the right way.
My good friend RonB says that when you take over a business, no matter how hard you try to be nice and keep everyone, you will lose most of the employees.
New ownership brings change and change drives people away.
Marinelli wants character, toughness, pure love of football.
“The key things are still left to be found. What are these guys about as people? This is still research time. We’ll bring them in and sit them down and find out who they are. More important, find out who I am, and what I expect and how I want things done. I don’t want to be fooled or tricked on that. source
Coach Marinelli has had the backing of both General Manager Matt Millen and owner William Clay Ford. The three of them are transforming the team.
Marinelli has brought in his own coaches, quarterbacks, new lineman, receivers, running backs defensive ends corners, safeties, everything except the kicker. Jason Hanson is still there. He has excellent character.
You don’t have to tell me. You still do not believe.
Listen up. He is making a difference. The Lions are moving in the right direction for the first time in a long time.
In talking character, he brought up Warren Sapp. Sapp is a monster. He destroys his opponents. He loves football.
“Warren Sapp was that way. His football character was phenomenal.
“The No. 1 thing we look at right now is character. We’ve got a great feel athletically right now football-wise, from the combine, the workouts. Now we’ve got a chance to interview a lot of these guys we got to do a good job of finishing the evaluations of these people.”
Coach Marinelli was careful to not really answer any questions with straight answers, so all direct questions about players were answered with the usual, we looked at him, we like him.
It is not those non answers that make Marinelli interesting. It is the intensity he brings to the table.
John Wooden discussed building character in his UCLA basketball players. Vince Lombardi discussed how important character was in building his Packer teams. Sparky Anderson said that strong character guys were needed to win with both the Reds and the Tigers.
No one is saying that Rod Marinelli is the second coming of Vince Lombardi, but maybe, just maybe, he has The Secret to turning the Lions around!

What a change for the Lions……drafting for Character rather than drafting a bunch of characters….novel idea it is.
