NFL Football Revealed on Squib Kick

Colts Safety Bob Sanders - small in stature, large in impact

by James on February 1st, 2007

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Bob Sanders says - You will stop that running around right now

Bob Sanders (AP Photo/Darron Cummings)It is not like he is the Spud Webb of the NFL, but Bob Sanders only stands 5′ 8″ tall. Be that as it may, Sanders may be the key to victory for the Colts in the Super Bowl.

Against New England it was a key tip of a Brady pass. Against Baltimore, Bob was involved in 10 tackles. Against Kansas City it was an interception. It just seems like Sanders is all over the field.

Due to injuries Bob only played in 4 regular season games. Meanwhile the Colts struggled to get the job done on defense.

So is Bob creating so much mayhem… that he is the only ingredient the Colts needed to put their defense together?

No, it is more like he is coming out and going all out and making some key plays. The other players are feeding off of that and they are making plays, too. Suddenly, you have a Defense!

Preseason prediction

Before the season started, your intrepid author predicted the Colts would win it all. To arrive at that decision, there was some careful analysis to predict playoff opponents, size up the match ups, and see who would end up the winner.

Oh, and a lot of luck to look this good so far.

Now the biggest doubter of that prediction is your gallivanting author himself.

How could the Colts win?

Their defense, frankly, could not stop my Grandmother, using her walker, from gaining 5 yards on an off tackle play. Could Peyton Manning just throw so many touchdowns they would overcome the lack of run defense?

You know and so does the Squibster that it does not work that way. Maybe during the regular season you can win some games that way, but not in the playoffs.

The Changing face of the NFL

Football has changed in my lifetime. Used to be the middle linebacker was the most important player on the defense. Now, with all the passing, it is often a safety that can guard against the deep pass and also read the defenses and stop the run.

So, needless to say, the Colts looked doomed from the beginning of the playoffs.

Super Bob Sanders

Then along came a guy named Bob.

Now a defense that could not stop anyone is only giving up 75 yards per game on the ground in the playoffs. That is against Kansas City, Baltimore, and New England.

What makes it more impressive is that Kansas City used Larry Johnson on the ground to win all year. Baltimore expressly planned to run the heck out of the Colts. New England had the two pronged running attack of Corey Dillon and Lawrence Maroney.

In other words, these teams planned on running, were going to win by running, were going to set up the pass by running, were going to control the clock by running, and who knows, probably sell hot dogs by running.

Yeah, Bob Sanders has helped Indy find a defense. Now let’s see if they can find victory!

NFL Football Fan Question Can the Colts run defense contain Benson and Thomas?

As always, any NFL Football related comments are welcome.

3 opinions for Colts Safety Bob Sanders - small in stature, large in impact

Bob Sanders is the real difference. Without him, the defense doesn’t click. And the defense has kept the Colts in the hunt.

No one will probably make him the MVP but he is the missing piece.

    Colts by a touchdown.
