Cory Redding - Tag your it! Be careful how you franchise
NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
Cory says - Hey, be reasonable, the tackle spot was just temporary
Get yourself ready if you play for the Lions and your name is Cory Redding. You see you made the humble mistake of playing at a very high level.
Yeah, yeah, it sounds crazy to say any Lion played at a high level, but Cory did.
You see, Cory had to fill in for the two Shaun’s. That would be Shaun Cody the second year player from USC and Shaun Rodgers the former All Pro from Texas.
The two Shaun’s were plugging the middle for the Lions and making it very tough for any team to run on them. Cory, at the time was playing defensive end.
When the two Shaun’s… went down with injuries, (ok, there was that little illegal drug thing with Rodgers), Cory filled in at defensive tackle and added a certain quickness to the position that had been lacking.
Cory’s stats went up and up. Now he has made the mistake of being valuable, but playing tackle.
Everyone should franchise
You see the Lions can make him a franchise player to keep him. You can only do this to one player. If you do that, he gets the average of the top five players at his position.
| POSITION | FRANCHISE TAG | TRANSITION TAG |
| Tight end | $4.37 | $3.61 |
| Wide receiver | $7.61 | $7.04 |
| Offensive line | $9.55 | $8.26 |
| Quarterback | $12.61 | $10.18 |
| Running back | $6.99 | $5.98 |
| Cornerback | $7.79 | $6.76 |
| Defensive end | $8.64 | $7.70 |
| Defensive tackle | $6.77 | $5.54 |
| Linebacker | $7.20 | $6.48 |
| Safety | $4.49 | $3.98 |
| Kicker/Punter | $2.07 | $1.92 |
The Lions are going to say he was a defensive tackle, because it is a better bargain than what defensive ends go for. Cory is going to say he was a defensive end just filling in for a tackle.
Hey, what is 1.9 million, you may be saying?
Let’s go back to Cory Redding for a minute. He has four years in the NFL with 12 sacks and 102 tackles in 57 games. He had his best year in 2006 with eight sacks — mostly as a defensive tackle. If he argues he is really an end and wants the DE franchise tag over the DT tag, the Lions will have to look at one sack every 4.75 games, and 1.75 tackles per game played. When you consider Detroit has draft selections at Nos. 2, 34 and 66, you would think the team should be able get a real good player at one of those spots. source
As you can see, 1.9 million may signal bye bye for Cory Redding.
Franchise or Transition
What about using the transition tag? Well, the franchise tag forces a team to compensate the home club with a first and 3rd draft pick, effectively meaning nobody is taking you. The transition tag is cheaper, but only gives the home club the right to match offers.
So be careful who and how you tag.
The Lions will tackle this difficult situation and hopefully, not leave Cory Redding feeling defensive.
NFL Football Fan Question How about it, how will the Lions bungle this one?

Trade Big Baby. Sign Cory. Draft and pass rushing end. The line needs to get younger and more athletic. Love Shawn Rogers but can he get his weight under control and be the force he was when he had Big Daddy playing next to him? Big question. He basically threw away last year with his weight issues, his drug issues and then his knee surgery issues. How is he doing in the off season? Maybe he needs to talk to Dan Marino about Nutri-System.
