NFL Football Revealed on Squib Kick

Countdown to the Draft: The New Orleans Saints, NFC South (3-13)

by Jesse on March 9th, 2006

Looking back on it, I don’t think that the Saints ever really had a chance. I mean think about it: before the season started they were already without a home and destined to play in strange environments all sixteen games. Their first game was immediately delayed and moved to the Giant’s stadium. That alone could really throw you off. The thing is, that wasn’t all. They also had to take care of their families, pack their bags, fly out of New Orleans, and get themselves some temporary housing.

That’s stressful for anyone. But that didn’t mean they could just sit back and grab a good pick. They were never good. With normal conditions perhaps they would have gone 5-11. Perhaps.

On the plus side, they finally got rid of Aaron Brooks. On the minus side, they had to, and will have to for a while play against Jake Delhomme twice a year every year, and every time he beats them he reminds them who they could have starting at quarterback if they had just dumped Brooks a little sooner.

So who are they going to go after in the draft? That’s a hard one, because they really have very few highly talented players that they can really build their team around.

First and most importantly they need a quarterback to build their team around. I really don’t think they want Vince Young, though they’d probably take him if they had to.

I think their first choice is going to be Matt Leinhart, though they may end up grabing Cutler.

Joe Horn is getting old and expensive, so they may end up having to spend a third round pick on a reciever, as he’s pretty much the only one on their team worth mentioning that can catch the ball.

Look for them to also try to revamp their defense, whether through the draft or free agency. They could really use some help at just about all of the positions.

If the Saints want to be anything like respectable next year, they’re going to have to do a lot of work, because the games they won they barely won, and the games they lost they got killed.
