NFL Football Revealed on Squib Kick

David Carr would like to remain standing

by James on April 7th, 2007

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

David Carr is lying down on the job, even as Tully Banta-Cain tries to get his attention

David Carr (Globe Staff Photo / Matthew J. Lee)When David Carr goes to sleep, he lies down.

When David Carr plays football, he gets knocked down.

He gets knocked down a lot.

Carr averages getting sacked 50 times a year. That is a lot. In fact it is too much.

No more is that going to happen. He found a way to improve his pass protection.

David Carr signed with the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers have an offensive line, something that was lacking with the Texans.

Now don’t get carried away here. Carr signed to be the backup to Delhomme.

Still he will have a chance to remain standing when he does play.

“First of all, the guy was running for his life in Houston,” said longtime NFL personnel man Gil Brandt. “Carr was drafted by an expansion team and they thought Tony Boselli would be the answer at left tackle, and then he never played a game.

“They never really had a left tackle or an overall offensive line that compares to Carolina’s,” Brandt said. source

Training under the Master

Last year, David Carr had the opportunity to be coached by quarterback guru Gary Kubiak and it paid off big time!

Through it all, Carr continued to improve. He had by far his best completion percentage last season, at 68.1, under first-year Texans head coach Gary Kubiak. His 82.1 passer rating last season was a half a point behind Delhomme.

Why the Panthers?

Carr was shown interest by a number of teams. It was finally narrowed down to two teams.

After visiting Carolina and Seattle this week, former Texans quarterback David Carr has agreed to a two-year, $6.3 million contract with the Panthers to back up Jake Delhomme.

The contract will pay Carr $3 million guaranteed and could be worth $8.5 million with incentives. source

vs. Delhomme

It was doubtful that Carr could beat out Hasselbeck at Seattle, but Delhomme is coming off of a very troubling season and it should get very competitive. Jake Delhomme has a QB rating of 82.6 and threw for 17 TDs and 11 interceptions.

Meanwhile Carr had a very similar QB rating of 82.1 and 11 TDs with 12 interceptions. The difference is that Carr did it with no offensive line and no running back help. Throw in he now has Steve Smith and Keyshawn Johnson at receiver, and things are looking good!

Oh yes, David Carr would like to remain standing and be the one standing after dueling it out with Delhomme for the starting job of quarterback for the Carolina Panthers.

NFL Football Fan Question Should Carr have held out for a better chance to be a starter somewhere?

As always, any NFL Football related comments are welcome.

5 opinions for David Carr would like to remain standing

You mentioned that David Carr “would like to remain standing…” What David Carr would not do in Houston was “remain” after practice to work on his game. He never learned - or was taught - to make pre-snap reads, to go thru his receiver progressions, to “feel” the pressure and move around in the pocket. If he had been willing to work harder on those things, he’d still be here in Houston. Goodness knows owner McNair HATED giving up on his personally chosen “Face of the Franchise” and he’d just hired Kubiak, who was the right guy to teach him. It was never Carr’s potential that we questioned, it was his work habits. You see Carr was your typical 9-to-5 worker. Overtime? Sorry, can’t. Extra hours? That’s not in the contract. Be a leader? Bond with your teammates? Show competitive fire, show the types of things that Jake Delhomme brings to the table, the things that make Jake a winner, Carr never showed in Houston. Good luck Panther fans, maybe Jake’s fire will rub off on him. But then he’d have to hang out with a teammate for that to happen; something he seldom (never?) did in Houston.

David Carr would like to remain standing …

    Sam J,
tell me more, will Schaub be embraced by the local fans?
What about Ahman Green? He struggled with the Packers the last few years.

The short answer is, yes, if we win; even if we don’t win but are competitive and exciting on offense.

David Carr, because of his personality, and looks, had (and still has) a devoted fanbase here in Houston. As a man of Family and Faith, you couldn’t script a better role model. Because he’s a “good guy” lots of folk here in Houston hopes he lands on his feet (no pun intended).

But he didn’t win. And not everyone here bought into the excuse about all the sacks. A fair percentage of them were his own fault.

The fans took notice of the fact that when Schaub got to town his “first official act” was to call each of the guys on the roster, and I mean all 53 of them, and introduce himself to his new teammates. The off-season workouts started here last week and already he’s established a rapport with Andre Johnson and his other offensive guys. The guys, his teammates, all picked up on his leadership potential, and most, if you believe the interviews, seem to like him already. Now that rapport should translate into better team chemistry which should translate into success.

So the fans will take to Schaub as the team gets more successful on the field.

I keep hearing about how Ahman Green is so injury prone, but when I do a little digging on my own, I don’t see it in the numbers. Except for 2005, when he went down for the season with a quad tear, he’s been a 1000-yd rusher and 300+ yd receiver EVERY YEAR. I still think he’s got a couple of good years in his tank. Plus, I think Green was also brought in to show the youngsters what kind of work ethic it takes to succeed (he DOES have a SuperBowl ring) in the RB position.

I think what Kubiak and Smith are doing with the free agents they’ve picked up are building a TEAM, not just putting a bunch of individuals on the roster. I like it. I think the 2007 are going to be on of those teams that will be “better than the sum of its parts”.

    Sam J,
wish you luck with the new QB and Green.

Green had a problem holding on to the ball. When he played my Lions, he seemed to drop balls and fumble balls and never really make the difference. It was hard to understand, because he has stats. Maybe the warm weather will help.

Of course, Favre was busy cutting us into little ppieces and laughing about it the whole time.
