Detroit Lions lose 20 to 16 - What We Know, preseason game 2
NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
Detroit Lions played exhibition game 2 against the Cleveland Browns and once again proved that the NFL Football preseason means little. It is a tune up and weedout process. Get your veterans ready and take a look at the rookies and new guys. That being said, we still like to dissect these games for what they are worth.
Let’s see, what do we know today that we did not yesterday? Hmm, Matt Prater can kick? That should help a lot, not. We already have a very consistent kicker. What else? Well, still no sightings of significance from our 3rd string receivers, Mike Williams and Charles Rogers? Ok, will grant you that, but that is not new.
How about, what do we know that we already knew? Hmm, Jon Kitna is average? Ahh, now that is significant. Huh? Yeah, because Joey Harrington was less than average or at least, he performed at a less than average basis. Consider Kitna an upgrade.
Anything else? We are not as good as the first game led us to believe? That is a very good thing. Huh? Why kid ourselves. The Detroit Lions are an up and coming team that still has a lot of up and coming to do. That is, there is still a lot of hard work ahead. Ask Rod Marinelli or better yet don’t, because he wants to remain grumpy and keep the players working hard. You see, for once there is a lot of potential on this team. Guys like Kevin Jones and Roy Williams and the new kid Sims and Shaun Rogers and Dre’ Bly, they all either have their act together or have tons of talent.
The quarterback situation is improved from last year, especially with Mike Martz at Offensive Coordinator. Although, Orlovsky is not the real number two. And don’t forget the work ethic is improved with Marinelli around.
Hey, after the last five years it finally looks like things are looking up. Now we have to have patience. These things take time. Time for players to improve, for coaches to get their systems in place, for the team to gain some chemistry. Will this team win the division? Probably not, but they do finally have the capability to challenge and perhaps make a good run.
