NFL Football Revealed on Squib Kick

Drew Brees is having an all time year

by James on December 9th, 2006

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Drew Brees trying to see if you are open

Drew Brees (Photo by Chris Graythen/Getty Images) Sometimes you are just wrong. Sometimes the conventional wisdom is just wrong. Sometimes your intrepid author appears to know nothing. Such is the case when it comes to Drew Brees.

Now we all knew that Drew was a good quarterback and that San Diego was going to get rid of him. What we did not know is that he would be having one of the all time great years!

Now our wrongness, if that is a word, does not stop there. Noooo. We had already decided that Drew was pretty good, but way too small to ever really amount to anything. He is… listed at 6′, but appears to be smaller than that. Most good NFL QBs are around 6′ 4″ tall.

Isn’t it all about Reggie Bush

All the focus was on Reggie Bush. The man can run and cut and catch passes and, well, you know. Yeah, Reggie can do it all. Not only was he a big star at USC, but we knew he was going to instantly be a big star in the NFL.

That was the beginning of the season. Now as time has worn on, we have found out that Reggie is good, but still a rookie.

Drew can win by throwing to Marques who?

We knew the Drew would throw a lot of passes, but come on, it is still the Saints. They have no receivers, right. They are destined for last place.

That was also the beginning of the season, before Marques Colston and Devery Henderson started hauling in passes. That was before we found out Reggie Bush could catch a ton of balls. Now it looks like New Orleans has a shot at the Super Bowl.

Unbelievable Stats

If that was all there was then so what. He is having a good year. Good for him.

But that is not all there is. Check out these stats:
383 yards and 3 TDs against Baltimore. Baltimore! They normally give up 3 TDs in about 3 weeks.
314 yards and 3 TDs against Tampa.
398 yards and 1 TD against Pittsburgh.
510 yards and 2 TDs against Cincinnati. That is no misprint. 510 yards!
349 yards and 2 TDs against Atlanta.

These 5 games came all in a row.

Setting aside the cultural impact and focusing solely on his on-field impact reveals some staggering numbers: Brees is on pace for 5,037 passing yards this season, meaning he has a realistic shot of breaking Dan Marino’s 22-year-old NFL record of 5,084. He has completed two-thirds of his passes, the best completion rate of his career. He averages 8.4 yards a pass, more than half a yard better than the gold standard of NFL passers, Peyton Manning. source

Hard to believe that your intrepid author did not want his lowly Lions to go after Drew Brees in the free agent market. Sometimes you can just be wrong.

NFL Football Fan Question Have you become a Drew Brees believer? Can he deliver the Super Bowl to a beleaguered New Orleans? Can he break the all time single season passing yardage record?

As always, any NFL Football related comments are welcome.
