NFL Football Revealed on Squib Kick

Drew Stanton, John Beck - NFL Questions II

by James on May 6th, 2007

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Yesterday we questioned the sanity of the Eagles taking Kevin Kolb in the second round. The series continues now.

Last year Jeff Garcia played for Philly and did a great job. Jeff used to play for the Detroit Lions and that takes us to Detroit’s second pick in the Draft - Drew Stanton.

Detroit traded their second round pick down to get Drew Stanton. Now Drew is my man, being a Spartan and all, but the need for defense is strong on the Lions. In college, Drew had his struggles, often throwing wounded ducks at crucial times.

Shortly after Stanton was drafted by the Lions, offensive coordinator Mike Martz — he had gushed about Stanton’s skills as an athlete, a competitor and a leader — admitted that he wanted to “fix a few things” concerning Stanton’s mechanics. source

So how much is Martz changing? Well, everything.

Said Martz about Stanton: “He’s a really talented young man. We just go back and strip him away of everything and rebuild him in how we do things. It’s hard, it’s really hard for him.”

About the change in the way Stanton throws the ball, Martz said it has to do with pressure points.

“He’s had a `fat’ hand on the ball, so he kind of pushes it,” Martz said. “He’s got a live wrist so when he gets that hand placement right, the ball snaps out of there pretty good. It’s all the little things we’ve got to get in line. He’s had great success doing what he’s been doing, but I think we can help him a little more.”

But heed my words here, as a loyal Spartan fan, Drew is a big time leader and often demonstrated it on the field. At times he was all the Spartans had and would single handedly lead them down the field.

If he corrects his throwing motion, look out!

Drew played for the MSU Spartans, once coached by Nick Saban, who left and ended up being the Dolphins coach and finally realized it was going to take some time to win in Miami, which leads us to Miami and their second pick in the draft - John Beck.

The Dolphins passed on a chance to get Brady Quinn believing John Beck was just as good or almost just as good and a heck of a lot cheaper. But just who is John Beck from BYU?

Beck certainly has relied on his Mormon upbringing to guide him. A USA Today All-American honorable mention out of Mountain View High in Mesa, Ariz., Beck embarked on a three-year church mission in Lisbon, Portugal instead of going to college right away. source

Beck led his team to an 11 - 2 year his senior season, while winning the Las Vegas bowl and Mountain West Player of the year. Beck finished behind only Ty Detmer with 11,021 career passing yards.

With the uncertainty of Duante Culpepper and his physical health, the Dolphins felt they needed a good young quarterback.

Beck, who will be 26 when the 2007 season opens, will be looking to get himself ready to play, especially given the uncertainty surrounding Miami’s quarterback quagmire.

“As soon as I get down there, I want to be like a sponge. I just want to soak up everything that I can,” he said. “That way if I get a chance to perform on the field, I can make the most of it.”

John Beck will get every opportunity to play and if Culpepper does not come back healthy, then it will be the John Beck show at Miami!

NFL Football Fan Question Will either of these two quarterbacks become starters?

As always, any NFL Football related comments are welcome.
