NFL Football Revealed on Squib Kick

Dwight Freeney is inked to a long term pork chop with sea salt

by James on July 15th, 2007

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Dwight Freeney, 93, participating in a Leap Frog contest with the Dolphins

Dwight FreeneyFreeney blasting around the line and heading for the opposing teams QB has been a common sight for oh so long. Now Dwight will be a little slower as he has a lot of cash to haul around.

Freeney and the Colts agreed to a six-year, $72 million contract that includes a $30 million signing bonus, Freeney’s agent, Gary Wichard, said Friday. source

30 Mill is a hefty signing bonus, no doubt about it. Is Dwight worth it? Does he really have 3 E’s in his name?

Those of you that unwittingly waited until last year to zero in on the Colts football machine, may be remarking the Freeney is not very good, but last year was a tough year for stats for Freeney. Look to the past to see what he can really do.

Freeney, a first-round draft pick in 2002, missed the Pro Bowl this year for the first time since his rookie season. He was held to a career-low 5½ sacks while fighting shoulder and leg injuries, the only time he has been under double digits in sacks.

Freeney has 56½ sacks and forced 27 fumbles during his first five seasons with the Colts.

Dwight is an important cog in an anemic Colts defense.

Freeney is the only player in Colts history with three consecutive double-digit quarterback sack seasons. In 2004 he led the NFL with 16 sacks, winning the league sack title and a spot on the AFC Pro Bowl team. His 40 sacks in his first three seasons rank 3rd-most by a player to start an NFL career. On February 4, 2007 Dwight Freeney won Super Bowl XLI with the Indianapolis Colts, in which it marked the first time in NFL history a team with the last ranked rush defense won the Super Bowl. source

It is interesting to note Freeney’s hobby of the Madden NFL game series, in which he has won the EA Sports Madden Bowl in both 2003 and 2004.

Diet

Dwight stays on a special diet to avoid a cramping problem he had early in his career and also because he is quite light for a modern day defensive end at 6′ 1″ and 268 pounds.

By eating the right combination of foods, weighing himself daily and recording everything he takes in, he hones his metabolism to avoid cramping, a problem he had early in his career, and to maintain his edge. source

Dwight Freeney is very good about the diet for 5 days out of the 7 and then lets loose.

He’s good about this, but not perfect. He takes one or two days a week off, and those are the times his teammates enjoy most.

“On the days he’s not on it, he eats anything and everything in sight. It’s crazy,” defensive tackle Darrell Reid says. “In the offseason he gains a lot of weight. He likes to eat. That diet works for him during the season, and he’s in great shape, but ask him about the days he’s not on the diet, when he goes for fried chicken, cookies, ice cream, cake. That’s how he wants to eat.”

Dwight will be rich enough now to buy whole restaurants to help with his diet and the Colts defense will stay intact for another Super Bowl run!

NFL Football Fan Question Do you watch your diet? Is Freeney for real?
