NFL Football Revealed on Squib Kick

Emmitt Smith has got the moves

by James on June 3rd, 2007

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Emmitt proves needs no fullback to lead the way

Emmitt SmithFor those of you to be lucky enough to remember Emmitt Smith playing football, it probably came as not surprise that he would carry the same level of excellence into other arenas.

Ok, we probably did not think one of those arenas would be ball room dancing, but it is.

Then again, anytime Emmitt sets his mind to doing something, he does it.

So why should we be surprised by a little bit of dancing.

He always did have good footwork.

These days, women are as apt to ask Emmitt Smith for a dance as they are for an autograph.
And that’s understandable, because the Dallas Cowboys legend created quite a stir last year while Fred Astaire-ing his way to victory on ABC television’s immensely popular Dancing With the Stars series. source

Your intrepid author grew up a Lions fan and got to watch years of Billy Sims and Barry Sanders. Both of them were tremendous backs that could carry a team by themselves.

Billy Sims has a habit of making the big play, the winning play. Billy could run and catch and racked up the combined yards before a serious knee injury cut his career short.

Barry was just elusive, hard to catch, and hard to bring down. Sanders played for a number of almost worthless teams and led them to victory after victory. At times, Barry was all the Lions had on the field.

Hold the phone - want to hear the Squibster live? (this is where you say yes!) Then go to suicide fan.com and listen to Mike Keating and Jim Edwards (that is me) talking NBA and LeBron James.

Emmitt was not like that. Dallas surrounded him with strong teams and great players. Emmitt had the ability to make a cut and accelerate to top end speed. Who can forget the number of plays that Moose Johnston, his big fullback, would give him a lead block and Emmitt would run behind him patiently until Moose decked some guy and then Emmitt would make his cut, move to top speed and be gone.

At least against my Lions, it was not the flash of Barry or big plays of Sims that Emmitt gave you. It was the consistent following of Moose into the line, waiting for the hole to open and then accelerating. It was truly beautiful to watch.

Funny, Emmitt did have great footwork, but he never danced around at the hole in football. He was always moving forward.

Emmitt is not all about dancing now either.

He still loves talking about football. He believes his work as an ESPN studio analyst this fall will sate his appetite. Smith is jacked-up about dissecting games and issues with Chris Berman, Mike Ditka and Tom Jackson on pre- and post-game shows every Sunday and Monday.

“It’s a good way for me to keep my hand in the game,” he says.

Emmitt’s goal is to own an NFL franchise. And how will he do that?

When he’s not making charity appearances or giving spur-of-the-moment dance lessons, Smith usually can be found working as a real estate developer. The eight-time Pro Bowler has successfully invested in commercial properties in the Dallas area and his hometown of Pensacola, Fla.

He has enlisted Roger Staubach and Jerry Jones as mentors in the real estate development business. Both of them have been very successful at it. Emmitt seems to be a natural.

Staubach and Smith co-own a development company, and the one-time Cowboys quarterback is impressed with Smith’s entrepreneurial sense.

“Emmitt has the leadership skills to build a real business,” Staubach recently told Fortune magazine. “Someday, he may come in here and say, ‘I’m buying you guys out.’ “

Truly one of the good guys, Emmitt has got all the right moves!
