NFL Football Revealed on Squib Kick

Falcons Vick have a bad day, Young evaluates QBs

by James on December 11th, 2007

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

The return of the Squibster. Now the good and the bad. The good is that my most excellent boss and coworkers filled in quite nicely and that is most appreciated.

The bad is the Squibster is diagnosed with Cancer and undergoing chemotherapy. Fear not, they say the cancer is one that is curable, so let us move forward with our dreams of football!

Oh boy, and you thought you had a bad Monday.

Try this one out.

The Falcons awoke to news of their disgraced quarterback being sentenced to nearly two years in prison for dogfighting.

The day never got any better.

With Reggie Bush watching from the sideline, Drew Brees passed for 328 yards and three touchdowns as the New Orleans Saints bounced back from a devastating loss with a 34-14 rout of Atlanta on Monday night. source

The only fun part of this game, since it was so one-sided, was the banter between the announcers. In particular, was he examination by Young and Jaws about the spread offense and Michael Vick.

Young maintained that with the speedy corners in the pro game and the speedy linebackers in the pro game that the spread could not work. Jaws agreed.

Then Young went on about wanting someone to try it anyway with the right personnel. The problem with that, according to Young was that if your quarterback gets hurt, which is likely in the spread or run and shoot, then your backup would have to be a spread quarterback. Jaws agreed.

Young also went on about not drafting a quarterback with a high first round pick. The jump to the pro game is just too much. It takes time to develop that quarterback and by the time it happens other intangibles may come into play. Such things as how fast they read a defense, what control they have over a huddle, how accurate they make certain passes, etc. Those things are hard to evaluate in a young college quarterback.

It is hard if you are a struggling team and a JaMarcus Russell is standing there waiting to be drafted. It also increases fan support immediately. But it still takes time to groom him for the pro game and there are no guarantees.

Sorry if you had to watch this game and were not a Saints fan.
