NFL Football Revealed on Squib Kick

Football Dedication

by James on July 1st, 2006

Hey everyone, my name is James and this is my first blog for squibkick.com. The rookie is ready, so strap in and let’s get going.

This column is dedicated to my father, John, for bringing me into the football world at a young age. My earliest memory was at the age of 4, watching the Detroit Lions in grainy 12” black and white TV.

We never did see the end of the game, because Dad always got too mad at the Lions and would flip the TV off before the third quarter. Yeah, even then the Lions stunk.

Around the age of 9, my Dad took me to a Detroit Lions game at old Tiger Stadium in downtown Detroit. It was a gorgeous venue; two tiered, with seats so close you could really feel the action. During baseball games it was so cozy that everyone felt they could walk down to home plate and knock one off the upper deck.

That day also happened to be the day of a big snow storm, so snow was falling all day long. Our seats were in the end zone bleachers. It was cold, dark, and snowy and the Lions were losing. Oh you guessed it, Dad and his boy were in heaven. Of course, there was that confusion of the Lions playing 4 quarters, instead of 2. Who knew?

Special Notes: There is a new football blogger at squibkick.com and that would be yours truly. The fine people at b5media.com, which is definitely the most complete blogging stop on the net, went looking for a young, eager, struggling writer to fill the shoes, the big shoes of Jesse S. As it turns out, they hired me instead. Thanks Aaron from Technosailor. Thanks Jeremy from Ensight.

Probably should stop at this point and give a shout out to Maricar, who not only writes the extra fine blog Keeping the Castle, but was smart enough to marry aspiring 55Fiction contributor, Ted. You see it was Ted that recognized my passion for sports and especially football.

One more note; and this is to my beautiful loving wife, Darcy. You know when ESPN is on, showing all the sports and this humble writer is intently watching it, well that is just me doing some research. Ahh, life is good.

Football Fan Question: My Dad, old Tiger Stadium, a snowstorm, and the Lions…Where did you see your first game? Who got you hooked on football?

Fan Answer: Michigan Stadium. Michigan vs. ND. Rocket Ishmael returned TWO kickoffs for a TD. Ouch! Elvis was also in the BIG house. Elvis… Grbac of course.

Looks good for the Lions so far. They’re undefeated.

Go Blue! Sorry Jim, but my dad raised me that way. I have watched U of M with my dad and 3 brothers since I can remember. I missed many endings of games too, my dad is the same, he turned off the tv also when they weren’t winning.

Your a good writer, keep it up.

The interesting thing about the Rocket is that he was only 5′ 11″ tall. Hard to believe he held up so well. If memory serves me, he went to the canadian football league out of college for some obscene amount of money.

Hi Jim, Welcome to b5! I’m not much of an NFL fan, but you just might make one of me yet. Well, maybe not, but I’ll stop by once in a while to read your posts anyway. :) Have fun!

Mine was the BIG house as well for an Ohio state game, with a free ticket from a buddy’s girlfriend.
Thanks for the squib kick definition too.
