NFL Football Revealed on Squib Kick

Gaines Adams begins to make draft gains

by James on April 10th, 2007

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

With Gaines Adams the motor never stops

Gaines Adams

Gaines Adams is starting to make the climb up the draft. More and more teams are taking notice of this fine defensive end from Clemson.

Gaines is 6′ 5″ tall and weighs 258 pounds of pure beef muscle.

Most impressive… is the fact that Gaines turned in a 4.6 40 time. For a defensive end that is blazing speed and don’t think that several general managers did not take notice.

Today’s game requires speed at the defensive end position.

Most of the mock drafts have Gaines Adams going somewhere between 5th and 7th in the draft. That may be changing.

Peter Shrager for Fox Sports has Gaines going number 2 to the Detroit Lions.

I don’t see them passing on Gaines Adams — a potential Pro Bowl defensive end — at 2. Losing James Hall hurts, and although picking up Dewayne White helps — Gaines Adams brings instant credibility to the Lions’ pass rush. The 2006 ACC Defensive Player of the Year, Adams dominated both on the field in 2006, and at the combine drills in Indianapolis back in February. His 12.5 sacks during his senior year were a career best,…

FOXSports.com’s John “Czar” Czarnecki take on Adams, the day after his combine performance, “Going strictly by his numbers, Adams blew away his competition by running a 4.64 40-yard dash and also finishing no worse than third in his group in three other categories. When going by these numbers, Adams could be this year’s Mario Williams.

So how could the Lions pass on Brady Quinn or Adrian Peterson or Joe Thomas? Well, maybe they can’t. This won’t be an easy decision.

Maybe we should think this through so Matt Millen does not have to.

Coach Rod Marinelli is trying to build a first class Tampa II defense, just like his mentor Tony Dungy and his friend Lovie Smith.

Cleveland wants Brady Quinn and they draft 3rd. Tampa wants Calvin Johnson and they draft 4th. They both want them so bad, that they may be willing to work a trade with the Lions.

Any trade would involve swapping first picks, so the Lions would still get Gaines Adams.

Even the Cardinals with the next pick would want Joe Thomas, which still leaves Gaines Adams for the Lions. Ok, the Cards do have some old dudes playing defensive end, but probably won’t use the pick to replace them.

Now the Vikings probably will be looking for a receiver or defensive end, so it starts to get dicey at that point.

Hey, we did a pretty good job of thinking that through. Matt should be happy.

So depending on draft day deals, we may see Gaines Adams make the Lions roar at pick number 2.

Gaines would be a fine addition for the Lions. He is not worthy of #2 pick money though so it would benefit the Lions if they could trade down to get him and pick up a lower pick. Could this spell the end of cousin Kalimba? Me thinks the end of Kalimba Edwards has been foretold by the Cylons. He is not part of the Plan, despite the Moron handing out stupid contracts…aka Matt Mullett (Lions fans were shaking their collective heads when Mullett gave Kalimba a huge contract last year after several years of non-production). Cousin Kalimba rewarded the Lion’s faith in him by having probably his worst season, playing under a coach known for developing defensive lineman nonetheless. This doesn’t even compare to the “train wreck” season of our best interior lineman aka Big Baby. Big Baby couldn’t even partipate last year because he came into camp so overweight and out of shape. Got busted for taking his wife’s “diet pills” and was suspended by the league…smart move Big Baby. Guess when Big Daddy wasn’t there to baby sit you it showed how little maturity you have. Again, the great GM Matt Mullett gave you a big contract so you have the money…that’s all that matters doesn’t it?

You had to know when Bozo the Clown said he wanted more money, and William Clay Ford hired Matt Millen instead, that we were in trouble.

I’m a wee bit confused of the Lions situation…

Why would they consider Adrian Peterson (he’s a RB right? I can’t follow college sports ’cause they bore me)? What happened to KJ? Or would they use him as trade bait for another WR? ;)

Kevin Johnson ended the season with a severe injury to his foot. He is still in rehab and may or may not play this year. All the backup Lions running backs were also on the injury list by the end of last season and even if the Lions bring any of these guys back, none of them deserve to start for an NFL team. The Lions did sign TJ Duckett in the off season and traded Dry Bly to the Broncos for running back Tatum Bell. My feeling is that even when KJ was healthy he was nothing more than an average NFL starter with no breakaway speed. Teams seldom get a chance to take the best running back in the draft. Even though the Lions have other glaring needs at other positions I would still take Peterson. The team needs a star running back and Peterson is the entire package. Having him in the backfield makes teams respect our running game and will allow Martz more options on offense than he had last year. We can utilize Duckett near the goal line and rotate Bell and maybe KJ in there to reduce the load on Peterson and keep him from getting banged up.

KJ had a foot injury that was originally predicted to keep him out for the whole season. They now think he may be able to play early in the season.
He lacks breakaway speed, but has great hands, excellent power, but no vision. Martz uses him for a receiver out of the backfield more than anything.
He is tough, he is good, but will never be great.
A good fantasy number 2 back.
