Houston Texans drive the Carr to victory
NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
David Carr is feeling good these days. His coach even gave him the day off. They just recently pulled off a big victory over the Dolphins on a keeper from Carr. It was a very emotional victory for the Texans. They had lost 18 of their previous 20 games and were beginning to wonder if they would ever win again.
David Carr estimates heaving a Roger Goodell-autographed football into the Reliant Stadium stands after scoring Sunday’s go-ahead, 1-yard touchdown on a perfectly sold, play-action bootleg could cost him $5,000.
“I did it two years ago, and it was $1,000 then,” Carr said. “I think the league has raised the price. My wife was mad at me. But the money goes to charity, and it was definitely worth it.” source
It just so happens that your intrepid author watched David Carr play in one of the most exciting games of all time. It was against… Jeff Smoker and the Michigan State Spartans in the Silicon Valley bowl. David Carr had 531 yards in a 41 to 35 loss to the Spartans.
The following weeks with all the talk of the top two college quarterbacks being Joey Harrington and David Carr, all of my friends raved about Joey Harrington. Anytime your gallivanting author mentioned a quarterback called David Carr and all the long bombs he threw in the Silicon Valley bowl against my Spartys, everyone kind of said, “oh, that is nice, but you should see Joey”.
Little did the Squibster know he would be treated to several years of Joey Harrington as a fan of the stinkin’ Lions. Joey ran the West Coast Non Offense to perfection. It went nowhere. Now Joey was not the sole reason the Lions lost most of their games, but he did not seem to help either.
Meanwhile Carr was lying flat on his back trying to set some new inter-galactic getting sacked record. The Texans did not have an offensive line. No, really, the game would start and no one would line up at either tackle or guard spots. (Well, maybe a little bit of exaggeration).
Did you know that it could have been different? David Carr wanted to go to Oregon his Junior year. He was being redshirted. Seems he could not forget his wife to be in the future, Melody, while he was at college. He spent a fortune calling her on the phone and in the meantime did not concentrate on school or football.
Anyway, he thought of playing for Jeff Tedford at Oregon, but they had a pretty good college quarterback by the name of, you guessed it, Joey Harrington. So Carr stayed put and ended up playing my Spartys in his Senior year.
What a game it was. Jeff Smoker (later with the St. Louis Rams) had 376 yards passing in that game, but it was MSU Spartan Charles Rogers (recently released by the Detroit Lions) that went crazy with 270 yards receiving. That is right, 270 yards!
But get this, Rodney Wright of Fresno ended up with 299 yards receiving. Yeah, 299 yards. Heck, TJ Duckett had 184 yards rushing and went largely unnoticed. Yes, it was a game for the ages.
To make a long story short, the Texans chose David Carr and the Lions chose Charles Rogers and Joey Harrington both gone from the team.
NFL Football Fan Question Is this the start of better days for David Carr and the Texans?
