NFL Football Revealed on Squib Kick

JaMarcus Russell will not play for the Lions!

by James on April 23rd, 2007

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Calvin asks his line - Hey guys, would Oakland be an OK place?

Calvin JohnsonDon’t tell me, JaMarcus visited the Lions compound and immediately rejected the Lions?

No, JaMarcus Russell liked his visit to the Lions.

JaMarcus recognized what losers the Lions are?

No, JaMarcus felt they have a new future and are heading in the right direction.

He is pulling and Eli Manning or a John Elway? (College players demanding trades from the teams that drafted them) College quarterbacks seem to be able to get away with that kind of thing.

No, JaMarcus is nothing like that.

NFL Football JaMarcus Russell factoid - JaMarcus is the all time Alabama High School passing leader with 10,744 yards. Now get this, he is also the 5 leading rusher with 7,362 yards! source

So what is it?

Ok, you have to promise not to tell anyone. This secret information came from the voice of the Detroit Lions himself, the well respected writer at the Detroit News, Mike O’Hara.

Mike has been around the block a few times and understands how the Detroit sports scene works. In his words:

What a great player, and what a great talent, but he’s the least likely of the top players to be taken by the Lions for one reason — he’s too good, too valuable not to be drafted first. If the Raiders don’t take him, they’ll trade down to somebody who will. source

Mike makes the point that if JaMarcus Russell does fall into the Lions hands, then they have to draft him.

Why?

However, I remember the 1983 draft, the deepest in history for quarterbacks. Six were drafted in the first round, and three are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame — John Elway, drafted first overall by Baltimore and traded to Denver; Jim Kelly, drafted 14th by Buffalo; and Dan Marino, drafted 27th by Miami.

Oh, and the Kelly pick? The Lions could have had him at 13 and also passed on Dan Marino. Ouch!

All of this plays into the thesis that the Lions should take Brady Quinn if JaMarcus Russell is gone after the first pick.

Mike does not think that is very likely either.

Head to head, I’d take Quinn over Matt Leinart as a pro prospect. Quinn won’t end up in Detroit — unless there’s some kind of deal that gives the Lions extra picks and he gets drafted around the 10th pick. That’s an unrealistic scenario.

The draft is sneaking up on us and we are still waiting to see how the top picks unfold!

NFL Football Fan Question Will the Lions end up with Calvin Johnson or Brady Quinn? Will Oakland take JaMarcus Russell?

As always, any NFL Football related comments are welcome.
