NFL Football Revealed on Squib Kick

Joe Thomas fishes as Matt Millen looks for receivers

by James on April 15th, 2007

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Eric has line, Joe has a pole, Let’s go down to the fishing hole

Joe Thomas (AP)It is Lake Michigan and Joe’s father, Eric, wants to go fishing.

Eric Thomas wants to go fishing on draft day.

Joe has been instructed to take his cell phone by his agent, Peter Schaffer of Denver.

It is pretty much the norm for teams to call the player before actually drafting him, in order to sort of feel him out and to make sure he is not in jail or dead. Yeah, both have happened.

The call may come and be like this, “Hi, Joe, how would you like to play for the Detroit Lions?”

Detroit and Arizona are the two teams most likely to draft Joe Thomas. Both teams need help on the offensive line.

Most players enjoy all the hoopla in New York in the NFL’s annual draft extravaganza televised by ESPN.

Joe does not feel that way.

“You know what?” Joe Thomas asked over the telephone the other day. “For me, the whole NFL draft show is not really what I’m all about. I don’t define myself by where I go in the draft.

“I define myself by how I play in the NFL. I don’t want the NFL draft to be the celebration of the end of my career. I’d rather spend the day at home with my family and have a last few days before I’m shipped off and get ready for the NFL season. source

If Joe is lucky he will hit the King Salmon and the early draft call.

NFL Draft Trivia

Gil Brandt of NFL.com provides us with some draft trivia.

The first player selected in the 2007 NFL Draft will be the 22,086th player taken in NFL draft history.

…The No. 1 overall pick in the draft has been traded 13 times before or on Draft Day.

The youngest No. 1 overall pick was Alex Smith (20 years old). The most likely candidates to be No. 1 this year are JaMarcus Russell (21), Calvin Johnson (21) and Brady Quinn (22).

If Calvin Johnson is selected No. 1, he will become the first Georgia Tech player in history to do so.

If JaMarcus Russell is selected No. 1, he will become the second LSU player to achieve that honor (Billy Cannon, Los Angeles Rams, 1960).

If Brady Quinn is taken No. 1, he will be the sixth No. 1 choice in Notre Dame history, and the first since 1972. source

Finally Gil Brandt provides us with this important trivia chart. Memorize it to amaze your friends.

Over the past three years (765 selections) the leading conferences are:

ACC — 17 percent (127)
SEC — 15 percent (116)
Big Ten — 15 percent (115)
Pac-10 — 13 percent (96)
Big 12 — 11 percent (86)
Big East — 5 percent (40)
Mountain West — 5 percent (37)
Conference USA — 3 percent (26)
MAC — 3 percent (22)
WAC — 2 percent (18)
Sun Belt — 1 percent (6)
Div. I-AA schools — 6 percent (47)

GM Matt Millen of the Detroit Lions Lives!

The most drafted position in the last 9 years in wide receiver with 294. Of course, Matt Millen drafted about 290 of them for the Lions!

NFL Football Fan Question Joe Thomas is for real. Which team will be making that call to Lake Michigan?

As always, any NFL Football related comments are welcome.

Lions could use more players that like to spend their free time hitting the fishing hole (as do I) and less time hitting the bong (Charles Rogers), hitting the buffet table (Shaun Rogers), hitting on other players (Dre Bly) or getting hit by defensive lineman (Jon Kitna). Lets hope whomever the lions draft that he just flat out likes to hit people (preferably on the other team), in the mold of last years first round pick (Ernie “Frieght Train” Sims).

What a refreshing attitude. Here’s hoping Thomas finds success wherever he ends up playing.
