NFL Football Revealed on Squib Kick

Jon Kitna and other bad quarterbacks

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Peyton says the bar has been raised

Peyton ManningWhy does it seem like there are a handful of great quarterbacks and a large bunch of mediocre quarterbacks?

Ok, great ones.

Tom Brady, no doubt. Accurate as all get out. Rarely leaves the pocket.

Peyton Manning, no doubt. Quick reads. Strong and accurate. Makes big plays.

Brett Favre, some doubt, because he is getting older and has to carry around the NFL record book.

Michael Vick, wait a minute, the NFL wanted him to be great, but he had other ideas.

We thought maybe Marc Bulger or Drew Brees after last year, but it is just not working out that way.

Carson, Donovan, Philip Rivers, Vince Young? All too erratic at this point, but all have the potential to move into that higher echelon.

Tony Romo is a ball of fire right now and if he can keep it up, there is time to move up the list, so to speak. You should not hold Monday night against him. Everyone has an off night.

Enough with the greats. How about the crummy ones?

It has become a common lament among NFL fans: What does our cruddy quarterback need to do to get replaced?

In the cases of Matt Leinart, still mysteriously starting over Kurt Warner, and Damon Huard the answer was injuries. Still no word on what Chad Pennington will have to do to get himself benched and give the Jets a chance to win.
On a Sunday of truly miserable quarterback play — Leinart, Huard, Jon Kitna, Matt Hasselbeck and Jay Cutler combined to put up nine points — we begin with Mr. Pennington. source

In fairness, Leinart and Cutler are young and inexperienced and Matt Hasselbeck is usually pretty good.

But they were all pathetic this past weekend.

Hey, what about Chad Pennington, thought he was on the rise last year?

There will not be a worse pass thrown in the NFL this year than the pop fly Chad Pennington threw into double coverage in the end zone with the Jets leading 24-21 in the Meadowlands.

Wait, wait, got ya on this one, wasn’t Jon Kitna leading the league in passing yards going into the Washington game?

As the Lions lost their 21st straight game in D.C., first-round receivers Roy Williams (3 for 36) and Calvin Johnson (1 for 3) had four catches for 39 yards. Lion’s flameout Charles Rogers (like Johnson, a No. 2 overall pick) still hasn’t hooked on with another NFL team, but Carlos Rogers did return a Kitna interception 61 yards for a touchdown for the Redskins.

Oh, oh, ohoh, Matt Hasselbeck, yeah, Matt was going to get revenge on Pittsburgh.

The Seahawks had the ball for only 19 minutes, 15 seconds, but that was plenty long enough to embarrass themselves in all areas. Matt Hasselbeck averaged 4.3 yards per attempt on 27 throws. Shaun Alexander averaged 2.3 yards on 11 carries. And no receiver had more than 38 yards.

Leinart? Injured.
Delhomme? Injured.
Rex Grossman? Just plain bad and now benched.
Loseman? Benched.

Geez, didn’t this used to be a quarterback’s league?
