NFL Football Revealed on Squib Kick

Jon Kitna of the Lions must go, unless the owner or GM can go

by James on December 11th, 2006

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Jon says “Fire Matt Millen”

Jon Kitna (photo by Daniel Mears Detroit News)The headline reflects my current thinking on the stage of the Lions. Jon Kitna must go. He was pitiful against the Vikings as the Lions lost a very winnable game.

It was so bad the fans did not even care.

Vikings 20 - Lions 20. The Lions were brilliant with 6 turnovers in holding onto the first pick in the draft.

Is it because Kitna threw 3 interceptions that he must go? No. Those hurt, but his protection was pitiful.

Is it because Kitna was sacked 3 times? No. Again, his protection was pitiful, between lack of talent and injuries there is no offensive line. Did you check out the rushing stats? Minus 3 yards. Yeah, minus 3.

Before we also run Kevin Jones out of town, take note that he caught 6 passes for 67 yards and 1 touchdown on a pretty incredible run after the catch.

Wonder how happy Kevin was watching former Lion Artose (Detoose) Pinner run for 125 yards and 3 touchdowns?

So why do you want to get rid of him? Because Jon Kitna is not going to lead you to the Promised Land. Everyone knows in Detroit you will lose and then you will blame the Owner, then you will blame the General Manager, then you will realize they are staying. Sooooo, you blame the quarterback.

Which brings me to … Jon Kitna must go.

Jon failed to connect with Roy Williams several times. He just could not make the pass.

On 4th down late in the game, with the Lions down by 10 points, Coach Rod Marinelli elected to go for the touchdown. They were sitting on the 2 after 3 unsuccessful try’s at the goal line.

It was a questionable call by Marinelli. A call that we would have hooted on the coach for in past years, but Marinelli is not like the coaches from past years. He talks of putting pressure on the players and seeing how they will respond.

They went for it. The receiver was covered (Furrey), so Kitna tried to come back to an open Williams, but protection broke down and Kitna was sacked.

OK, sorry Jon, no running attack, no blocking, but we still blame you. It’s just the way it goes in Lionsville. Ask Joey Harrington.

NFL Football Joey Harrington factoid Joey threw for 190 yards and 1 touchdown and beat the New England Patriots 21 - 0. This is the man that could not play in Detroit.

NFL Football Tom Brady factoid In the same game, the usually reliable Tom Brady, fumbled twice, got sacked 4 times, threw for only 78 yards, got shut out and nobody asked for him to go.

NFL Football Ernie Sims factoid Ernie had a great day with 9 unassisted tackles. He has a solid shot at rookie of the year with the way he is playing.

All right, all right, maybe Jon does not have to go, but we can’t seem to get rid of Ford the Owner or Millen the General Manager, so who can we blame? Joey is not around anymore.

NFL Football Fan Question How long does one have to remain a Lions fan? It was just a couple of deaths by axe and it was in a former life. Geez, give a guy a break.

As always, any NFL Football related comments are welcome.
