‘JUST CUT HIM’ say the Jets
I found this article today in the New York Post (via Football Outsiders) fascinating.
“I think we should release him; he’s too injury-prone,” one player said.
“He’s like an egg back there,” another player said, referring to Pennington’s fragility. “I mean, look at the ways he’s gotten hurt. He hasn’t even been hit that hard. The injuries have come from awkward hits and falls. I think we should just cut him.”
That, my friends, is stunning. In the football world, THIS BIGGEST no-no is publicly criticizing your teammates. You just don’t do it. Unless you’re Terrel Owens, in which case you sit out a year. Now those players weren’t just talking amongst themselves, no, they were being interviewed by a reporter. In other words, they meant to say that. It wasn’t some slip of the tongue.
If that really is the mood of the team, then that tells me Chad Pennington isgone. I mean gone. One, because there’s no way the team will follow him as their quarterback, and two, because he’s not going to want to stick around.
As of right now, I’m betting the Jets cut him, and he ends up signing either with the Ravens or with the Lions. Possibly the Bengals if John Kitna goes, but I don’t see them going after him. Other teams that might have quarterback problems are the Texans, the Dolphins, the 49ers (highly doubtful), and the Raiders. The problem with the Raiders is that they want a quarterback who can really air it out, and that is exactly the type of player Chad Pennington isn’t. If you want a guy who’s accurate and can throw the short outs and over the middle, he’s your man. If you want a guy who throws the deep out, you need a Peyton Manning or Daunte Culpepper. The Vikings could be a possible fit if they dump Culpper. One other team that could go after him is the Kansas City Chiefs, for two reasons. One is that Trent Green is on the way out, and the other is that Chad Pennington and Herm Edwards got along really well together in New York.
