NFL Football Revealed on Squib Kick

Labor talks resume, FA delayed

by Jesse on March 4th, 2006

Most people probably heard that the labor talks between the NFL and the player’s union led by Gene Upshaw broke off. A lot of you probably heard that they resumed, and some of you then heard the news that they didn’t go anywhere. Now the few people still following this winding story will be interested to know they’ve started back up again. The difference this time is that no one expects anything, so you never know if things might just work out. That doesn’t mean, however, that the two sides aren’t taking things seriously. They all know what the ramifications would be if they don’t work something out, so expect them to come up with some sort of a solution.

Perhaps some of you don’t understand why labor talks for next year affect this year. Quite simply it’s because if things don’t work out the 2007 season will be uncapped, and this season won’t have the progressively higher salary cap. Without an agreement the salary cap this year will be about 94 million dollars. Should an agreement be made to extend the contract, the two sides will also figure out the numbers for salary cap, and they’ll be getting progressively higher, starting with this year.

Right now many teams don’t know whether they will come to an agreement or not, meaning they don’t know whether they are going to be 5 million over the cap, or five million under the cap. That is really hard, because then they don’t know whether or not they can go out and spend in free agency. Thus, they pushed it back hoping something would happen.
