NFL Football Revealed on Squib Kick

Lance Briggs, Shawn Springs, Matt Millen - which one makes no sense?

by James on April 28th, 2007

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Lance Briggs is jumping at the chance to be a Redskin!

Lance Briggs (Heinz Kluetmeier/SI)The rumors are flying all over the place.

Let’s start with the Redskins going for Lance Briggs, again. Yeah, yeah, we heard this one before and nothing happened, only this time it makes a little more sense.

Washington does not like to improve through the draft and they would get a proven player in exchange for their 6th pick and maybe something else.

Meanwhile Chicago cuts payroll, gets rid of an unhappy player, and gets the 6th pick in the draft.

Oh, and don’t forget Lance gets to be the man, which is something he would never get playing next to Brian Urlacher.

Shameless Squibster promotion - You can find your intrepid author on NFL - The Blitz for the April 25th show. My four minute slot is found about 7 minutes into the show.

Trade would change the draft

So, before we move on, what effect would this have on the draft? This is where it gets interesting.

Remember Chicago sent Thomas Jones packing and kept Cedric Benson at running back? Hmm, even though most mock drafts have Washington taking Amobi Okoye, and he would not be a bad fit for Chicago, what about the thought of taking a game breaking runner like Adrian Peterson?

Chicago also may look at LaRon Landry at safety. The Atlanta trade (another rumor to move up and get Calvin Johnson from Detroit) kind of hinges on Atlanta getting LaRon Landry.

Atlanta wants Calvin Johnson so that Michael Vick, if he is still in the league, has someone to throw to besides tight end Alge Crumpler. (Squibster full disclosure - Alge Crumpler was one of the secret weapons on my 13 - 3 Fantasy Football team)

Meanwhile, Killer Kowalski at Mlive.com has this to say about Detroit dropping to Atlanta’s pick.

He thinks the Lions will end up with Gaines Adams at No. 4, but if they end up at No. 8 Patrick Willis is not as much of a slam dunk as you may have read. He thinks LaRon Landry is more coveted, and if it’s between Willis and Leon Hall it’s a coin flip. source

Just to add to the confusion Killer reports that Cleveland believes the Lions will take Quinn.

Q: Brady Quinn to the Lions wouldn’t surprise you?

A: No. I keep hearing out of Cleveland that the Browns think the Lions are going to take Quinn. With Adrian Peterson’s shoulder can’t help him, and they may not think he’s worthy of that spot. This is a guy who has hurt himself nearly every year he’s been in college. That’s guaranteed money we’re talking about.

Shawn Springs

Another odd rumor has Washington sending Shawn Springs, the corner, to Detroit.

…the Redskins are smitten with him as well, sources said, mulling over options to trade up to get him (the team has shopped cornerback Shawn Springs to Detroit, which has the second overall pick, again in recent weeks). Completing such a trade would be difficult — perhaps impossible — without including next year’s first-round pick. source

Matt Millen and the Lions

And finally there is Matt and all the odd things we expect him to do. Matt’s anti-legend grows and grows.

The Detroit Lions organization met Friday and concluded that, unless a blockbuster trade offer comes their way, they will draft Georgia Tech wide receiver Calvin Johnson.

Many will deduce that this decision is a matter of posturing, but the organization insisted it wasn’t. Nor did it sound like it. Detroit has decided that if Oakland goes with LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell, as many expect, it has no choice but to draft the next best player on its board, Johnson. source

When you think about it, Matt Millen may take a lot of criticism, but to line up Roy Williams on one side, Mike Furrey in the slot, and Calvin Johnson on the other side has to scare a lot of opposing teams.

Could crazy Matt Millen do the unthinkable and draft a wide receiver and make it a good thing?

NFL Football Fan Question Are the rumors driving you crazy?

As always, any NFL Football related comments are welcome.

James….James…You disappoint me. Last year I did a post for every pick in the first round :)

    Jesse,
that was the plan, but the 5 year old dropped a glass of water on the laptop. My daughter had her two cousins over (3 teen girls) and two of their boyfriends were over + my eight year old special needs child and my water spilling 5 year old. (the wife was out of town)

Barely even got to watch the draft. Then of course, all my friends, (lions fans) kept calling. and Aaron had me do a podcast live.

that was all, sorry to dissappoint.

but enough about my pathetic life, give me your thoughts, how did your team do?

It was actually quite draining when I did it last year–wouldn’t recommend it unless you have a really comfortable chair. Too early to say how most teams are doing…
