NFL Football Revealed on Squib Kick

Lovie Smith is a great coach, but needs to loosen up (the offense)

by James on February 8th, 2007

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Lovie listens to Tony tell him how to run an offense! ouch!

Lovie Smith and Tony Dungy (AP)Now that you have watched the Super Bowl and now that you have read about the Super Bowl, it is that time again, when we get our microscopes out and go over every little thing.

In this day and age with sport talk on all the time, we have all become experts. Your intrepid author is no exception to the rule. But Bear with me, because it is just too tempting. :)

You see, Rex Grossman is going to get a lot of blame for losing the Super Bowl, but… your intrepid author maintains that Lovie Smith did not do him any favors.

Bob Velin and Gordon Forbes were rating the Teams for the Super Bowl in USA Today and had this to say about Lovie Smith

Coaching — Lovie Smith refused to open his offense up until it was too late. Grossman only threw eight passes for 32 yards in the first half. The defense had its moments, particularly in the red zone. Grade: B— source

Lovie is a great coach. He is primarily a defensive coach. That is all good and fine. All year long the Bears scored tons of points, as many as the Colts in the regular season, and they did it with Defense.

Either the defense gave the offense great field position or they just out right scored.

Now enter the Colts from stage left. They don’t turn the ball over even in the rain, unless it is in Bears territory. What is their deal?

So the defense can’t score.

The Colts also seem to drive up the field every time they get the ball. The Bears, consequentially, get bad field position.

Hmm, what can the Bears do?

Well, the answer came in the form of Devin Hester.

Oh, it isn’t what you are thinking. Not the 92 yard kickoff return. No, the help came in the form of squib kick after squib kick to keep the ball away from Devin Hester.

If there is one thing that the Squibster knows about it is squib kicks!

The Bears kept getting great field position from the squib kicks!

The problem was they did not capitalize on them. Lovie tried to keep the offense plain vanilla. It is the Super Bowl. You can not be plain vanilla and win the Super Bowl.

Did Lovie’s cable TV go out during the Colts - Chiefs game? Was his Satellite in a rainstorm during the Colts - Ravens game? Did he not notice that Indy was shutting down the run?

How can your game plan be to run, run, and then run to beat the Colts?

Oh, your gallivanting author is getting steamed up now. Don’t get me wrong, Rex Grossman is not Peyton Manning, but you have to give a guy a chance. You can’t run two obvious plays into the line and then on 3rd and 7 try to throw a deep ball down the sidelines in the rain against a quick Tampa 2 defense.

Sure, Rex could have played better, but it appears that Lovie put him in a bad position as well.

NFL Football Fan Question Are angry with Lovie’s offense or willing to admit we really don’t know as much as we think we do?

As always, any NFL Football related comments are welcome.
