Matt Leinart is out waxing Levi Brown’s car
NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
Levi Brown says “It is a really nice car, too”
Arizona is one of those teams.
You know the kind. You look on your schedule and say, “Hmm, Arizona on the road, we can win that one”.
They have been one of those teams for quite a while.
But today is a new day and Levi Brown will be playing right tackle and protecting Matt’s blindside.
GM Ken Wisenhunt had this to say.
From my philosophy, from having been in Pittsburgh and having seen the importance of the offensive line, I felt very strongly that it was important that we build a core of this team which is the O-Line and D-Line. And that’s why we took Levi over Adrian in that position.” source
They traded up with Oakland to pick Alan Branch of Michigan with their second pick.
Whisenhunt said, “I don’t know. Maybe there was an undercurrent of questions before the draft. Maybe some of that got out and the teams started talking. And when he slipped past the first 10 to 14 picks, maybe there was this undercurrent of ‘What’s wrong with Alan Branch?’ I can tell you there is nothing wrong and we are thrilled to have him.”
The Losing
It is a far cry from recent history.
In 1998, Jake Plummer led the Cardinals to a 9 - 7 record and a playoff berth. They had not beaten any teams with winning records.
That year they dominated the Cowboys and ended up losing to the high scoring Vikings. It has been their glory year of recent years.
Since that time, 7 victories has been their high point, Jake Plummer has moved on, and Dennis Green has been fired as head coach, and, as of last year, a new stadium has been built.
Stuff still kept happening, culminating in the loss to the Chicago Bears last year in one of the most quotable games in a long time with Dennis Green saying “They are what we thought they are”, over and over.
But today marks a new day and the losing Cardinals can see the light.
Ken Wisenhut is building a team. Yeah, that is right a team!
In this years draft the Cardinals picked up several potentially great players.
Rd Pk (Ov) Player Pos School Notes
1 5 (5) Levi Brown OT Penn St.
2 1 (33) Alan Branch DT Michigan (from Oakland)
3 5 (69) Buster Davis LB Florida St.
5 5 (142) Steve Breaston WR Michigan
7 5 (215) Ben Patrick TE Delaware source
We have discussed what Alan Branch can bring to the team before as a massive run stuffer in the middle.
Playing on that same Michigan team was wide receiver Steve Breaston and before you think he was only a 5th round pick and what is the big deal, think about this:
Breaston is the Big Ten’s all-time leader in punt returns and is fifth all-time in kickoff returns in the league’s long and storied history. source
The Cardinals will be loaded with skill players. The have Bolden, Fitzgerald, Bryant Johnson, Edgerrin James, Adrian Wilson at safety, etc.
Where they needed the help was on the offensive and defensive lines and that is where Brown and Branch will make the difference.
So are they going to win the division? No, a far cry from it.
What Arizona will be, is no longer that easy road victory that you can point to and sometime down the road a very tough opponent.
That leaves Matt waxing Levi’s car as long as Levi is protecting him in the pocket!

Levi Brown was a great get for the Cards. I thought Thomas might be available at #5, but there wasn’t enough difference between Brown and Thomas to worry about. Alan Branch may wind up being the steal of this year’s draft. Arizona was middle of the pack against the run last year and Branch will help that immediately.
