NFL Football Revealed on Squib Kick

Mike Holmgren has Seattle in position or Mike is gone

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Mike Holmgren shouts to make everyone better

Mike Holmgren (Mike Urban/Seattle Post-Intelligencer)This is going to be an awesome year for Seattle winning the Super Bowl in high fashion.

Shortly after victory the reporters will ask Coach Holmgren what he plans to do now that he has won the Super Bowl.

Going to Disney may be in the plans, but retiring would be the ultimate. Go out on top, be a winner. Lead the Seahawks to victory! Yes, that would be just fine.

The problem is, Mike makes a ton of dough and if the above scenario does not happen, then Mike may have to move on. He may find himself retired in a different way.

It’s an impossible scenario in which to predict, but this could be Mike Holmgren’s last season in Seattle. One theory is that if he wins another Super Bowl, he’ll walk off into the sunset, his coaching life fulfilled. Another thought is that he’s signed through 2008 and maybe he doesn’t want to enter next season as a lame duck coach. The final part is that former Falcons head coach Jim Mora, now coaching the Seattle secondary, has the look of a successor-in-waiting, biding his time until owner Paul Allen or General Manager Tim Ruskell make a decision on Holmgren. source

But can he get it done? Things have not gone so well after visiting the Super Bowl a couple of years ago, where they lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers 21 - 10. Last year injuries to Shaun Alexander, Matt Hasselbeck, Bobby Engram, and others cost them any chance to go the Super Bowl.

Still, in spite of it all, Mike carries on with great optimism about this year’s team.

It has been like this for the last few years as Holmgren lost his GM clout while no one really seemed to listen to his recommendations, be it about on-field talent or who really should be running this franchise. He lost all power and ultimate control, one of the big reasons he fled Green Bay for the Northwest in the first place. But Holmgren isn’t crying over spilled milk; instead he definitely sounds excited about this year’s Seahawks, mainly because the defense looks to be much improved.

Still, many positions on the field are not settled and need to be fought for, thus changing the last exhibition game into a fight for many players not only to make the team, but start.

Not this summer. Not with tight battles for roster spots at linebacker, safety and tight end.

“This year, we really need this game to help sort out some things,” Holmgren said Tuesday. source

In the Division the Seahawks will face the offensively powerful Rams, the ready to make that next step 49ers, and the fast improving Cardinals. One would think that Seattle could rule over those teams.

The schedule offers up 4 tough home games with Cincinnati, New Orleans, Chicago, and Baltimore. Those will be 4 rough games. There is also a road game in Philly that may be tough. Other than that, they have their division games and some other middle of the pack teams.

A lot of pressure will be on the quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, who no longer has Jackson to throw to, but does have Branch. A return to form by Shaun Alexander would go a long way in determining how the Seahawks fare this year.

So will Mike win the Super Bowl and go out gracefully or stumble and be led to the door?
