Mike is given the boot
The life of a kicker is a perilous life. They are the small guy amongst behemoths and yet, they often decide the game that the Behemoths are playing. Players and fans look on and wonder why? In the knock down, smash mouth game of football, why should some small side winding kicker decide the winner?
Bring in Mike Vanderjagt, who is often out-spoken and feels like he is one of the regular football guys and you could have a strange mix. Read what Dwight Freeny said… about him while he played for Indianapolis.
“Mike is really a great kicker,” said linebacker Dwight Freeney. “The problem is he doesn’t know his place. I don’t care how good he is or how much trash he talks on the sidelines; he’s still only a kicker. He is not part of the team and he is not one of the guys. He’s a dork. If he wasn’t such a great kicker, I would’ve killed him a long time ago.” source
For Mike Vanderjagt, the waiting to kick is over. Bill Parcells gave him his walking papers.
Interestingly enough, Mike is not a small guy. He is 6′ 5″ tall and weighs 218 pounds.
More interestingly, Vanderjagt is the league’s all time most accurate kicker. He even holds the league record for most field goals in a row with 42.
It begs the question as to why he was let go?
Last year while playing for Indy, Mike missed a crucial field goal that would have put Indy into overtime against Pittsburgh in the playoffs. The Steelers went on to be Super Bowl Champs. Since everyone from the coach down did not like Mike, he was released.
His psyche has never been the same. It is like getting the yips in putting. The putts go in during practice, but never seem to go in when the match is on.
