NFL Football Revealed on Squib Kick

Newsflash: Patriots Not Perfect

by admin on November 20th, 2007

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

The New England Patriots are playing at perhaps a level never seen before. It appears that right now, the Patriots would be favored against any team in NFL history. While going undefeated isn’t a given, it’s certainly looking more and more likely.

That said, the Patriots are far from being flawless. Here are a chinks in the armor that could perhaps end the Patriots run at perfection:

Laurence MaroneyThe Running Game
For as well as Tom Brady is playing, the Patriots’ running game isn’t overly impressive. Laurence Maroney, the Patriots’ starting running back, has only one touchdown this season. In fact, New England’s best running back this season (Sammy Morris) is out for the year due to injury. If another team finds away to slow down the Patriots’ passing game, the running game is far from being equally as dominant. In fact, it’s pretty average.

The Backup Quarterback
If something were to happen to Brady, the Patriots don’t have another quarterback who can come in and play with any level of experience. There is no battle tested quarterback waiting in the wings. Instead, the Patriots have the untested Matt Cassel. Cassel has all of 39 pass attempts in his three seasons in the NFL.

Aging Defense
While their defense has been good this season, the Patriots D could slow down as the season progresses due to their age. In the 30-something club on the defensive side of the ball are stalwarts such as Tedy Bruschi, Rosevelt Colvin, Adalius Thomas, Mike Vrabel, Rodney Harrison and Junior Seau. While it’s great to have experience, sometimes “experienced” can transform into “slow” overnight.
