NFC Pro Bowl - Who confused Roy’s invitation?
NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
Shameless self promotion Your brash, yet humble, author was invited to do a sports podcast over at the Hot new site by Aaron Brazell called SuicideFan.com. (You must listen to it - the Squibster has spoken)
You voted for me, right?
One thing for sure, is that Roy Williams of the Lions enjoys talking. You have to do something to keep your sanity while playing for the Lions. Roy made numerous predictions this year and most of them were wrong. (Squibster full disclosure - Roy is on my Fantasy Football team)
Finally Roy Williams made a prediction that was correct. Roy predicted he would be left off of the Pro Bowl Squad.
Wait a minute, there is… a Roy Williams on the Pro Bowl. Ohh, it is the Cowboys safety as a reserve. You don’t think…Nooo.. they didn’t get the two of them mixed up?
You can argue that the Lions did not win much. True. You can argue that Roy did not score much. True. But, come on, he was playing for the Lions. Sometimes he was quadruple teamed. When Kevin Jones missed games, they would have like 9 guys guarding him. Ok, slight exaggeration, maybe 7 guys.
Unfortunately, the Pro Bowl is a popularity contest for fan appeal. Your intrepid author keeps forgetting that Sports is a big money entertainment business first and a Sport second.
Flawed as it may be, it is still the only Pro Bowl we have. So, let’s take a closer look at who did make it.
If you told anyone at the beginning of the season that Drew Brees and Frank Gore would be Pro Bowlers, then please send me the numbers for Saturday’s power ball lottery.
Drew may be taking the surprising Saints (at some point, we have to admit they are for real) to the Super Bowl.
Frank Gore’s team, the 49ers, may not even make the playoffs, but took a huge step in that direction on the shoulders of Frank’s running ability.
The team is littered with Chicago Bears. Tommy Harris is so good, he makes the team at Defensive Tackle and he is on Injured Reserve. Nobody is arguing it. If you do, his teammate and fellow Pro Bowler, Brian Urlacher, will smash you into the ground. Then he will hand you the football and another Bear Pro Bowler, Lance Briggs will tackle you as you try to get up.
Did you notice the almost all Bear Pro Bowl special team? Placekicker Robbie Gould, Kick return specialist Devin Hester, and Special Teamer Brendon Ayanbadeho. And we only thought the Bear Defense was great! (Squibster full disclosure - Lance Briggs and Robbie Gould are on my Fantasy Football team)
Alge Crumpler made it at tight end, because he is about the only person that Michael Vick throws to. (Squibster full disclosure - Alge is on my Fantasy Football team)
Julian Peterson and Steve Hutchinson switched teams in the off season, Steve leaving Seattle and Julian going to Seattle, and yet both made the Pro Bowl squad. Julian went to college at Michigan State University, while Steve went to U of denied a BCS bowl M.
It may not be a perfect system, but at least one Roy Williams made the team!
NFL Football Fan Question What did you think of this years Pro Bowl? Did one of your favorites get left off of the team?
