The preseason is on us. It is NFL Football, baaaby!
Well, maybe. After all yours truly is rooting for the Detroit Lions. But this season will be different, yes, very different, because the Lions have Mike Martz running the offense. Hey, this guy made Marc Bulger into a quarterback.
After watching just the first quarter of the Lions vs. the Broncos, you can tell the difference. For one thing, it is hard to figure out what play they are running (and he is trying to keep it simple right now).
For another thing, we scored! We actually lead this game 10 to 0. For you non-Lions fans, those of you that root for legitimate NFL Football teams, you can’t know how odd it is to see the Lions with a lead.
NFL Football Mike Martz factoid Mike graduated summa cum laude (that means he is smart) from Fresno State University as a tight end in 1972. (geez, Billy Volek from Fresno yesterday, now Martz, who is next, Trent Dilfer? David Carr? And when will they start sending your intrepid author some cash bucks for the free advertising?)
Coach Martz was the offensive coordinator of the St. Louis Rams when they won Super Bowl XXXIV. He became the head coach the next year and in spite of great success (went to another Super Bowl); he was basically run out of town.
When he was at St. Louis, the offense was known as the greatest show on Earth. Here is what the Detroit Lions NFL Football site had to say
As a team, the Rams offense scored 526 points in ‘99, which is the fourth-best in NFL history, and accumulated a 17.8 margin of victory, which was third-best since 1950. The following season, they set a franchise record (third-best in NFL history) with 540 points. After scoring 503 points in 2001, St. Louis became the first NFL team to score at least 500 points in three straight seasons. Source
Now he is with the Lions. Look, we just went through 5 years of the West Coast throw 5 yards on 3rd and 9 Offense. You can have it. It does not work. Martz is a breath of fresh air around here.
