NFL Football Revealed on Squib Kick

NFL Football - Detroit Lions - total Morons or just teasing us?

by James on December 30th, 2006

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Roy Williams explaining big fish that got away

Roy Williams (Daniel Mears / The Detriot News)Now how often does this happen. My team is leading; just had a great drive and Roy Williams just caught a touchdown pass. The opponent is the Chicago Bears, our rival down the road. Things are so good that your intrepid author screams at the Wide Screen Hi-Def TV and shuts it off in disgust.

Huh?

Allow me to explain. My lowly Lions seem to win a meaningless game every year at this time to move much much lower in the draft.

Oh, you don’t get it, because… your teams are usually fighting for a playoff berth. My team, the Lie-downs, is always fighting for draft pick. It is all we got.

Things were going so good with Roy and Mike Williams dropping 6 passes in the first half. You could really see the fans rally around that in the bizarro world of the Detroit Lions.

So yeah, it was maddening to see my Lions challenging the Chicago Bears and Rex Grossman for a victory.

Fortunately, the Lions managed to pull defeat out of the jaws of victory. The other Williams, Mike Williams dropped a sure touchdown pass to end the game with a 5 point loss.

Now we find out the Lions could still not get the 1st pick. Prepare to laugh. This is what has to happen. The first tiebreaker is strength of schedule. The second is a coin flip.

So in the strength of schedule the Lions lead by 4 games going into week 17 and here are some factors.

In Minnesota-St. Louis, a victory for Minnesota — another NFC North team — helps the Lions get the first pick. It would add two games to the opponents win column and one to the loss column because the Lions played Minnesota twice. A Minnesota loss adds a game to the Raiders’ opponents loss column.

Buffalo-Baltimore represents a two-game swing. The Lions played Buffalo. The Raiders played Baltimore.

Atlanta (at Philadelphia) and New England (at Tennessee) played the Lions but not the Raiders. source

This goes on and on. Suffice it to say the Lions had better lose and hope it does not come down to a coin flip. Of course, a coin flip with Oakland may leave a coin standing on edge.

NFL Fan Football Question What is it like to root for a team to win at this time of year?
