NFL Football - New England will Receive, but will it be Branch?
NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
New England has problems. Huh? New England’s receivers have been turned upside down! Oh, yeah, they have problems. Now that Deion Branch is holding out and has filed a grievance, it is possible that their two top wide receivers will be missing for the opening game of the 2006 NFL Football season.
Earlier this year, David Givens signed with the Tennessee Titans. Just to show you what a Super Bowl victory will do for you, David, a solid number 2 receiver signed a 5 year 24 million dollar contract.
The Deion Branch story is the story of a boy made good.
Branch, 26, signed a five-year deal in 2002 after being selected with the 65th overall pick. He quickly emerged as the team’s best receiver and won the MVP award for Super Bowl XXXIX. He’s on the books to make $1.045 million this season, a figure far less than what comparable players at his position make. source
New England picks up a backup wide receiver and it is news! Huh? Badly in need of receivers, New England picks up Doug Gabriel. He is a 6′2″ 215 pound career backup type receiver. Even though he has some speed and a great build for a receiver, Doug is no Deion. The Patriots will play up the fact that Deion was only 5′9″ and 193 pounds, but just the same, Deion was coming into his own and will be the primary receiver if he ends up a Patriot.
The whole problem started with New England supposedly rewarding Deion Branch with a 4 year contract with most of the money coming at the end of the 4 years. The Patriots being one of the best teams at managing the salary cap were once again looking at a way to keep things rolling.
In the NFL, the contracts are cut contracts, which means there was no guarantee that Branch would ever see all that money. Also, since it was to start out at a low salary, Deion would be only ranked in the middle of the receiver group by salary in the NFL. This does not sit well with the star receiver for arguably one of the best teams in the NFL.
Where does that leave us? Oh, yeah, New England has problems.
