NFL Football Revealed on Squib Kick

Nick Saban turns down President George Bush

by James on July 31st, 2006

Nick SabanOnly Nick Saban could turn down the President of the USA. Hey, football is more important. Just ask Coach Saban. He is the most intense coach on the planet.

“It was really a tough decision,” Saban said. “I feel like my first responsibility is our team. That in no way disrespects the importance of the opportunity I would have loved to have had to spend dinner with the President.” Source

When Nick was coaching the Michigan State Spartans, his teams always seemed to be on edge. It seems they were more afraid of the wrath Nick than the other team. Consequently, they had a great record against great teams. Nick would get them all fired up and make them play great.

Problem was they had pretty much the same record against crummy teams. He was so intense that the slightest mistake against a bad team and he would go off on a rant that just make the whole team tense up and play poorly.

Reggie Bush
Special Bush note Reggie Bush agreed to a 6 year contract. Financial terms were not released, but you can bet it is for a bundle.

To Nick’s credit, he got a lot of mileage out of some very poor Michigan State Spartan squads.

Unfortunately, he took the money and ran to LSU. He felt there was a certain built-in disadvantage being in the backyard of UofM, Notre Dame, and Ohio State. If you couple that with the problems previous MSU coach George Perles handed to Nick and it more than explains his problems in East Lansing.

Fan Question Is your coach more intense than Nick Saban? Explain to me how this can be? Would you blow off the President for football practice?

I haven’t followed Saban’s career very much, either when he was at Michigan State or now with Miami. He definitely sounds like a pretty intense guy. As to a comparison — maybe Jon Gruden???

Jon Gruden is intense. That is why Tampa Bay went after him. Same reason Rod Marinelli was picked up by Detroit. Just think those two were together!

What did Gruden and Marinelli do the last 2 years, together?

    Brad,
Oddly enough 5-11 in 2004 and 11-5 in 2005. There was some internal problems in 2004. Don’t forget they teamed up to win the Super Bowl in 2002.
