NFL Football Revealed on Squib Kick

Norv Turner gets the San Diego job, how come?

by James on February 21st, 2007

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Norv says - Hey you, Squibkick guy, just watch me now!

Norv TurnerThis one, is at the same time obvious, and yet, questionable. Maybe you, my fine reader, can shed some light on this.

The Chargers hired Norv Turner after 24 hours of interviews. The other candidates that were interviewed went back to their jobs as hot dog vendor at Detroit Lions Ford Field and night janitor at Madison Square garden.

(Thank god, we did not lose the hot dog vendor off my Lions.)

Yeah, we knew once Norv was going to be interviewed, that he was going to be hired. Geez, they still run the offense he installed years ago as the Offensive Coordinator.

Still it is a questionable decision.

Turner had trouble winning in the regular season, going 58-82-1 in head coaching stints with Washington and Oakland. Schottenheimer had trouble winning in the postseason, going 5-13 overall and 0-2 with the Chargers. source

You just have to wonder. Dallas has turned him down twice. Most recently they gave the job to the Chargers Defensive Coordinator Wade Phillips.

Years earlier he was turned down by the Cowboys in 1998.

After Barry Switzer’s firing following the successful 1997 campaign, QB Troy Aikman made many urgent demands that Turner be named head coach. When Chan Gailey was named coach, Aikman was famously unhappy, stating “They’re screwing this team up”. source

Norv’s coaching record as a head coach is 58 - 82 -1 (they actually had a tie).

Is Norv good with the offense? Well, look no further than the 49ers this year. He turned Frank Gore into a big time back. He made Alex Smith into a credible quarterback and put the 49ers back on the track to the playoffs.

NFL Football Turner factoid Offense seems to run in the Turner blood. Norv’s brother, Ron, is the offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears.

But not everyone is cut out to be the head guy. So what gives?

Hmm, searching the possibilities brings up the fact that the Redskins and Raiders may not have been organizations in great positions to win.

Maybe Norv Turner gets along with A.J. Smith? Marty sure didn’t and it cost him.

The Chargers also hired a defensive coordinator.

Turner named Minnesota Vikings assistant Ted Cottrell as the Chargers’ defensive coordinator and said other coaches under contract will remain with the team. source

Considering the Chargers lost most of their coaches in the last two months, that leaves the Cheerleader coach, who is interviewing somewhere in New York right now.

Norv Turner better make it work, because if you can’t win with this Charger team, who can you win with?

NFL Football Fan Question Were you thinking Norv all the way?

As always, any NFL Football related comments are welcome.

Turner got the job because Daryl Rogers wasn’t available for an interview.

Thought they would want Bobby Ross back! :)

One big factor is that Turner implemented the current Chargers offense when he was here in 2001 as offensive coordinator. He knows the offense because he created it — right down to the terminology. There will be no learning curve for him.

P.S. Don’t bring up Bobby Ross. A lot of us are still sore that he ever got fired. :-(

Ross is the only coach who ever got the Chargers to the Super Bowl, so he has a special place in our hearts.
