Oakland Raiders sign Jeff George
NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
So will someone please stand up, avoid the rush, focus on your receiver and tell me why, oh why, is Jeff George resigned by anybody? Especially by the Oakland Raiders, a team with 3 quarterbacks. Especially by Al Davis, as shrewd an owner as ever existed, maybe…, rethinking here. Thinking is not an easy thing for the wandering mind of your faithful scribe. OK, Al may be too shrewd for his own good this time. More on Davis later.
OK, even your intrepid author has to admit that quarterbacks Aaron Brooks, Andrew Walter and Marques Tuiasosopo do not inspire dreams of the Ring and you know how absorbing the ring can be.
But in all fairness Brooks has been designated the starter by the well respected coach, Art Shell. The Oakland organization seems to feel Walter will grow into the position. So, why is Jeff George on the team?
Maybe the clue is in his history. After leaving Purdue, decommitting from Miami, Jeff went to Illinois, for one year. He left for a good reason.
What should have been a dream career with the Colts, who traded to make him the first pick in the 1990 draft and then rewarded him with the richest rookie contract in NFL history, turned ugly almost from the start. By the time it ended after four seasons with a trade to Atlanta, he had made vile gestures to the hometown fans, argued with Coach Ted Marchibroda, held out for 36 days, and tried to get a trade. source
Rather inauspicious start to an NFL career, wouldn’t you say?
NFL Football Jeff George factoid Jeff was sandwiched between Randall Cunningham (at his peak) and a young Duante Culpepper, when he played for the Minnesota Vikings. The lucky Viking fans witnessed a great year by Cunningham, then a great year by George, and then a great year by Culpepper. Must have seemed easy by then.
The only thing that comes to mind is that Al Davis thinks he can get some kind of insurance out of Jeff George. While not always endearing himself to the league, Al Davis has always been an icon for opportunity, whether it has been African Americans, Women, or other team’s castoffs. Could this just be another case of Al Davis offering opportunity to someone with the chance that they will embrace it? This usually opinionated author remains puzzled.

Would I have signed JeffGeorge if I was Al Davis? No way. I’d have held out for some disgruntled Billy Volek action.
Have you ever noticed that whenever Jeff George is on TV or mentioned on TV, the commentators invariably start talking about what a “pretty” ball he throws? It’s like that’s the only nice thing they can come up with to say about a guy who is pretty much universally regarded as a giant A-hole around the league.

Weaz,
when does the Billy Volek sweepstakes begin?
How can Tennessee have so many QBs and they just got rid of McNair.
My Lions should be interested in Billy.
Hope Jeff George does not become available again or my Lions may take him.
