Part I The Rex files - Rex Grossman played for the Colts? His family goes to Colts games?
NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
Another Rex, playing in the NFL
Rex Grossman has a history tied to the Colts and it goes way back.
You said Rex is a Colt?
That would be his grandfather Rex. According to the ESPN Pro Football Encyclopedia 1st Edition (proudly donated to the Squibster by Art Lower, real name given to disguise his fake name), Rex played for the AAFC for the Baltimore Colts.
The AAFC is the… All America Football Conference. Rex played in 1948 and 1949 in the AAFC, then they were merged into the NFL, but the franchise folded after 1 year. During that year Rex moved to the Detroit Lions to finish his career.
Grandpa was the first Rex Daniel Grossman, Dr. Dan was the second, and Rex is the third. That makes Rex Grossman a third Rex in a family of great athletes.
So, you said the family goes to Colt games? In Baltimore?
No, not in Baltimore, in Indianapolis. The family purchased season tickets to the Colts when they first moved to Baltimore in 1984.
Grossman football bloodlines
In fact, Dr. Dan is friends with Archie Manning and the Manning family. Now you know both quarterbacks have a famous football background.
Grandpa Rex was from Bloomington and he had two sons, Rex Daniel jr, and Frank “Dobby” Grossman. Rex, the son, would be the father of the Bears quarterback.
Then there is Rex Daniel Grossman Jr., or Middle Rex, otherwise known as Dr. Dan. Big Rex’s son and Little Rex’s father was an all-state quarterback who set passing records at Bloomington South High School that stood until his younger brother Frank ”Dobby” Grossman came along and threw 36 touchdown passes. Dobby’s records stood until Rex came along and threw 44. source
NFL Football Rex Grossman factoid Rex threw for 216 yards and 5 touchdown passes to win the State Title in High School to set a Indiana high school record for touchdown passes in a title game.
Little Rex
Dr. Dan Grossman used to have Little Rex delivering patient papers.
The ladies who worked for Dr. Dan Grossman as receptionists and administrators were all winks and smiles on those days. They doted on the Bears’ future quarterback. ”What’s your name?” they would ask again and again. The Beaver Cleaver look-alike would roll his eyes in exasperation. They knew darned well what his name was. He had told them a dozen times already.
”Wex Waniel Gwossman da turd,” he would say proudly, and the office would erupt with laughter all over again. source
Little Rex grew up to be Big Rex and now he is a Chicago Bear and he loves it.
Rex may be steeped in Baltimore Colt tradition, but he still enjoys being a Bear. He realizes the Bears practically invented the NFL with George Halas as an owner. He knows about Dick Butkus and Walter Payton. Rex appreciates playing for one of the great NFL Football franchises.
Top it off, the Bears are in the great city of Chicago and are close to Bloomington.
Could it be more perfect for Rex Grossman?
Well, there is this little Super Bowl ring thing.
NFL Football Fan Question Now you realize that Rex has the bloodlines, do you think he can get the job done?
