NFL Football Revealed on Squib Kick

Patriots guarantee that for a few years they will have a good player on their defensive line and a good quarterback

by Jesse on April 13th, 2006

I couldn’t help but laugh a bit earlier when I read an article discussing the Patriots locking up Willie McGinest for a few more years.

I can’t remember the exact wording, but it was something to the effect of “Patriots secure elitism until 2010 with resigning of McGinest”.

For starters, the longer a contract is, the less it means. A one year 3 million dollar contract probably means the guy will play for one year and get paid 3 million dollars. A six year 60 million dollar contract will never result in a guy playing six years for 10 million a year. It’s just now these things work. Unlike in baseball where when a guy signs a 4 year 48 million dollar contract, he gets 12 million a year for four years of play.

That is, the fact that McGinest signed a big looking contract for four years doesn’t mean that McGinest will play for lots of money for the Patriots for four years.

The second point is that locking up Brady and McGinest doesn’t guarantee anything.

Does any one have the same feeling I do, that the Patriots are, in fact, falling apart, but that the media is so obsessed with them you’d think they were getting stronger every year? When they lost Lawyer Milloy we were told he sucked anyways. Bruschi is, in fact, the cornerstone of their defense.

When they lost Bruschi for a few months, we were told they were so good they’d be fine, which, of course, the weren’t. When they lost Ty Law we were told that they would be fine. He was overpaid anyways. Their secondary has stunk the last few years.

After losing David Patten among many others we were told never to fear, as long as Tom Brady, Adam Vinatieri, and Bill Belichik were on the same team, they could never lose. But of course, they got destroyed by the Broncos. Then they lose Vinatieri.

But of course, they’re still hurling the BS at us saying that he wasn’t actually all that good.

In the end, you’re only goind to be as good as your depth chart says you are. My post title is dead serious. Having Brady and McGinest doesn’t mean they will be good forever, it means that they will have a good quarterback and a good defensive lineman. Two players aren’t going to kick field goals, break up passes, and make plays on special teams. You need a team that is good all around, and the Patriots no longer have that.
