NFL Football Revealed on Squib Kick

Peyton Manning and the Colts are having a private laugh

by James on May 12th, 2007

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Marvin Harrison reflects for a moment and then says “yeah, we are good, no worries.”

Marvin HarrisonHow is it you can win the Super Bowl and, in fact, win a lot a games for years, sometimes just missing out on the Super Bowl, and when it is all said and done, everyone is ready to write you off.

You, me, and everyone else know the Patriots are the team to beat.

Well, maybe.

There is this Peyton Manning guy and this running back named Joseph Addai and, well, you get the point.

Now the Patriots were very close to beating the Colts, so we just assume that with a little improvement, New England will be the Super Bowl Champs. (Hey, wouldn’t they still have to beat the Bears, too?)

Your intrepid author is no different than anyone else. The Patriots have moved ahead on paper and, boy, did they ever move ahead.

We are talking Adalius Thomas, Donte Stallworth, Randy Moss, etc. Those are some bigtime names.

Well, excuse me if the Colts and their owner aren’t getting a little private chuckle out of all this talk.

But somewhere in his Indianapolis office, you can imagine Bill Polian sitting back and smiling. You can imagine the voice doing his inner-monologue belting out devilish chuckle, followed by the sentence, “We have them right where we want them.”

Make no mistake — Polian, drafting at the bottom of every round after winning the Super Bowl, had another great draft. source

So just how did that draft go for the Colts?

Polian plucked three players on Day 1 who will make an immediate impact in receiver Anthony Gonzalez, cornerback Daymeion Hughes, and defensive tackle Quinn Pitcock. Polian couldn’t help himself in trading up to get Arkansas tackle Tony Ugoh in round two, giving up his 2008 first rounder in the process.

Hmm, not too shabby.

The Colts are still looking all the time to improve the team. The just signed Mike Seidman from the Panthers.

The 6-4, 261-pounder appeared in 43 games, 15 as a starter, for the Panthers. He missed the final 13 games of last season with a knee injury.
During his career, Seidman has 18 receptions for 158 yards and two touchdowns. He was a third-round draft pick of the Panthers in 2003. source

Seidman won’t light up the league, but it is these kinds of deals that Polian keeps making as the Colts GM to keep the Indy at the top of the division.

And don’t forget they have Tony Dungy coaching. Tony has a pretty high success rate in the NFL and is known as a defensive genius. His coaching tree includes Lovie Smith and Rod Marinelli.

Will the Colts keep laughing?

This final quote comes from Randy Hill of MSN Fox Sports.com.

Can Peyton Manning re-win the big one?
Well, the Indy Colts’ QB won a Super Bowl, hosted the big one (Saturday Night Live) and still receives more endorsements than Barack Obama.

Free-agent losses seem manageable, and with Rick Carlisle a goner from the Pacers, the Colts now have the best defensive scheme in Indianapolis. source

Well, it seems like there are still a lot of reasons to believe in the Colts.

Maybe Peyton and the Boys can just keep on laughing.

NFL Football Fan Question Are you laughing at the Colts chances?

Dude: I know its tough to write NFL articles this time of year. Outside of PacMan police blotters and Ricky Williams blowing red on the Chronic there isn’t a lot going on in the football world. Maybe you should do an article on the Kalamazoo Xplosion….they are undefeated. And while you at it throw in a couple cute cheerleader pics for your dedicated, fathfull, daily (though less than mature)readers. We have needs too you know.
