Randy Moss - we were all wrong
NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
As a Viking, Randy Moss had few peers.
With Daunte Culpepper throwing long bombs and Randy running under them, life was good.
Then the rumors started, well, more than rumors. Randy does not put out on every play. If he is not getting the ball, then he does not care about the play what so ever.
You watched him on TV after that with a critical eye. Randy was ruined.
When Moss got to Oakland, he was to be the savior. Finally the Raiders would have a deep threat to make their quarterback, uhh, just what was his name? You know, the quarterback? Anyway, Randy was going to make the team great again.
Backfire.
The team sucked and had no quarterback and Randy was pretty much worthless.
When he left for the Patriots, you thought Randy would be a menace in the locker room and on the field. Ok, your intrepid author had some misgivings, too.
But my badge of honor lies in the fact that Randy was drafted for the Squibster’s Fantasy Football team. Yeah, that’s right. Randy is mine!
And, man, has he produced.
Randy has realized that something special is going on.
Having taken a substantial pay cut as a way of demonstrating his commitment to fitting in, Moss seems to understand the magnitude of this opportunity. Seize it, as he has so far, and he’s looking at a Hall of Fame bust in Canton; blow it, and Superfreak is a Superfund waste site that no other NFL team is likely to touch….
The day before the Patriots’ 49-28 pummeling of the Dolphins, a game in which Moss twice out-positioned and outfought defensive backs for spectacular catches in the end zone, Moss told the Boston Herald, “The atmosphere around here is good. Some teams or organizations go out there and practice, and lollygag and go through the motions. Here, we take care of business inside the classroom and outside of it. And then go out there and execute and make things happen on Sunday. So, everything that comes with football is why I love coming to work, from the food, all the way to sitting around here with the camaraderie in the locker room.”
So, while Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts look on, most likely you will see Tom Brady and the New England Patriots firing the football to Randy Moss time after time.
Will we view it as one of the Grand Social Experiments of our time or just great Football?
